Yoyo doesn't unwind and spin, just slips to the end of the string. HELP!
« on: August 31, 2010, 07:22:08 PM »

Hi everyone,

I've been having this problem with a couple of my yoyos. After hand-winding them or a bind return, sometimes when I throw the yoyo it doesn't spin nicely, just slips loosely to the end of the string with barely enough spin to make it come back to my hand.

One yoyo that I'm using is a Henry's Viper (which is terrible for it) and the other is a Protostar which currently has only one silicone ring as the lousy thing kept flapping up and getting in the way so I had to remove it. I also put a brand new type 6 100% polyester string on it yesterday.

It doesn't matter how tightly I wind the string before throwing, it still happens. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it just because of the lack of a decent response system in each of these yoyos?

Any advice here would be much appreciated, as when your yoyo unwinds quicker than expected you tend to hit the floor. NOT GOOD!

Thanks,

Justin

Sounds like you need a more aggressive response system. If the response isn't aggressive enough the string won't have anything to grab on to.

I've only ever had this happen with no response system or a bad silicone response system in a yo yo or when the silicone is about to need replacement.

Sounds like you need to replace that silicone.

As I suspected. I'll Try and track down some flowable silicone and see how I go. I can't believe how quickly the stock O-rings wore out!

Thanks everyone

As far as silicone goes, I'd recommend Permatex RTV gasket maker. It lasts for quite some time.

Hmmm...

I spent ages researching which silicone to use, but I am yet to find the recommended brands (like Permatex) here in New Zealand. I'm just going to have to try several products until I can find one that works. I've never siliconed before, but it looks pretty straight forward. Not too sure how I'll avoid getting it in the small holes in the recess in my protostar though... :s

Thanks for the recommendation
