I put some new rtv red gasket maker on my protostar. Within a week, my bearing gets responsive and I open it up and I find bits of silicone in it. Any tips? I hate having to clean my bearing often. Or is this just the way that it goes?

I've used yo-yos that have gasket maker in them and haven't had a problem. Did it dry completely?

You must've done it sloppy and got some elsewhere. It doesn't just fall out once it's dry if it's done properly. That's all I use.

I use black gasket maker and I've never come across that problem before. We're you're applying it, are you making sure that it doesn't get in the bearing seat?

Not a problem with gasket maker, problem with technique.
Clean your bearing in mineral spirits for 15 minutes or so, shake it up for 5 sec per minute.
Make sure you apply the silicone without the bearing on the yo-yo. Use a spoon, facing down, to smooth-out the silicone & push it into the recess. Wipe the spoon periodically with a paper towel and keep swiping the tip of it around the recess until you can't pick anything up with it.
After an hour or so of drying/curing, clean up with the spoon. Then let cure for 12-24 hours.
Go back to it and clean up anything extra you may have missed before. Hold it under a light so you're sure not to miss anything.
Put the bearing & string on, throw a few times, then check it out.
That should last you until Alex makes his tutorial.

Redo the silicone job, a well applied silicone can last more than six months. Make shure you get no bubbles when applying it. You can also use a seringe for easier siliconing.

Thanks guys. Just another question. How do I take out the bubbles? and how would I know if there are bubbles?

When you first apply the silicone, make sure you see that the silicone is going all the way into the recess. If it doesn't go all the way in, the result is bubbles in your silicone. You'll know if you have a bubble when you smooth out the silicone with a spoon or index card (the silicone won't be a smooth surface, instead, it'll look patchy with bumps, etc).
Hope this helps!

You’ll have a hard time getting gasket maker through a syringe.. ~~ I think i'm the only one who doesn’t squirt it into the recess at all

That's because flowable flows in to fill empty areas. Gasket Maker doesn't do that as well so you have to either push on it with a spoon/clean-up tool or slide the tool through the silicone inside of the recess so all the bubbles shift up. Redo the silicone job, a well applied silicone can last more than six months. Make shure you get no bubbles when applying it. You can also use a seringe for easier siliconing.

We discussed this in a thread earlier.

If you go to a pharmacy and ask for a 20cc syringe it will come without a needle, then you need to cut an extra piece of plastic the sering has.

It seems a lot of messing around and expense spent for such an easy thing to do…
@yoyoz1... gasket maker is thick like toothpaste.. a 20mm syringe won't cope with the thickness of the gasket maker.. why you'd want to put it in that way though idk you'd get loads of bubbles when there's no need...

It would just be a more precise way of applying the silicone. Bubbles would be a lot harder to create because of how little is coming out of the end. I had a Permatex power can with a very narrow & short nozzle that lasted me a long time. It worked perfectly, there was very little excess silicone and never had any bubbles. But then I didn't need to use it for a couple months, I moved, and it dried up. With the syringe you wouldn't have the drying up problem due to it being air-tight. If it did dry up, you could always take it apart and put it back together, quite unlike the power cans.
I would probably take a dremel to it and saw the "needle" to be a lot shorter if I couldn't get a shorter extension/attachment to the syringe.
