I like it. And this: jan 1: boom starts, kids beg parents to buy yoyo jan 2: parents realize yoyo cost more than $10 jan 3: boom dies
Is the funniest thing i've ever heard in my whole life... Seriously. I laughed out loud.

Hmm, I've enjoyed the conversation.
One thing I have noticed that needs to be addressed. The yoyo is a complex toy. You don't just stick in double-a's and push buttons. The product needs to be tailored more for it's audience: Kids. How much fun is expected to be had when a kid, or even an early teenager, opens up a box with very little info printed on it, one cotton string, and a small pamphlet (that chances are they will toss with the box)? What happens when that kid try's it out for the first time, when he/she has no other information about it? An opportunity to create a new member of the yoyo universe doesn't have that much of a chance right now, in my opinion.
Sure, the internet and forums are great, but is more accessible to teenagers, what if your younger and want to learn? And really, the internet is the ONLY place to learn, outside of clubs which may attract some but not all new comers. Fresh ideas about educating new throwers NEEDS to be explored. I don't think the current trend will cut it.
An idea I had that might help a little: Commercial-short tutorials. Companies need to figure out how to not only promote their product, but educate their audience.

well to shorten what i would have posted fast 201's spin stars, mosquito's , and freehand 2'svi are all available in mainstream stores. We need to advertise , advertise, advertise. not just on tv webisite ads will be more effective since kids spend less time watching TV and more time on the internet. we need viral videos on the internet if possible.
this boom will be the most important one in history

Thoughts that this thread spawned:
1) It'd be interesting to see some sort of metric to judge the current popularity of yoyos, like number of yoyos sold last month or something (though I imagine stores keep information like this private for business purposes). To be honest, I don't think I'd even come close were I to try and guess the current number of people who yoyo on a regular basis.
2) I think that any boom that occurs now will leave a lot more residual players behind (i.e. those that keep up with the hobby rather than dropping it once the fad ends) than past booms. Widespread bearings and unresponsiveness have made a lot of tricks a lot easier than they were in the 90s.

Didn't we have NRC once, and then only a few people came? There isn't enought people online reading the fourms and stuff for it to be a good idea to have an NRC IMO.... I'd be more than happy to come, and as luke has said it was be awomse to have a North/South/east and West Contest and then nats, but there arn't enought people online to make them worth it IMO

I was all set to go to NRC at Ellesmere Port in 2007 but it got cancelled. You are right though, there aren't enough people interested up here but then there are no events to promote it outside of London (except Gloucester). I think what is needed is for a yoyo company to do a tour of demos at the summer music festivals / tattoo conventions etc... Glastonbury, Reading/Leeds, Download at Donington, Sonisphere at Knebworth, T in the Park in Glasgow. It would help create an image that a yoyo isn't just a cheap toy for young children... Another way to improve the image and promote the hobby would be to sell PGMs and such like via a major chain of sports outlets such as JJB instead of just toy stores.

Yeah deffo! Growler- What your name in Real? Been to any contests or meets in the past 2 years or so? I can't put the name to a face I thought that NRC happend but only a handful of people came, i dunno tho it was before my time I'm really hoping that Duncan get there stuff out to big stores in the UK ToysR us and the likes, as they have in the US.... I know there was a SpinDial tour int he Uk a few years back, but again i'm not the best to ask about that I know that Some Shops int he UK Stock yoyos and they are Glasto, but again i'm not 100 sure. I'm all up for new contest, but in a real term there isn't enough players to have mutiple contests a year, with different people at each one... I mean most of us could esily travel to pretty much anywhere in the UK with out that much hassle

I don't think peaks will get past their previous top value around 300. Titanium yo-yos like the Sovereign, Oxy Ti & Catch 22? Sure. I think that the main thing a boom in America relies on is getting past the apathy that the country is obsessed with. They need to put their iphones down and pick up a yo-yo for longer than an hour for this thing to carry on. I'm glad that Auto-return yo-yos are dead for the most part. They need to stay dead. Them and yo-yo balls are counter-intuitive and don't encourage learning the up & down (the skills, ignoring the pun) of the toy. Glad you made this thread IV, I think this will be a popular discussion for a while. It's something our community needs if we're going to encourage non yo-yoers
