A New Boss, an old bearing problem.
« on: June 13, 2010, 02:54:50 PM »

So, I ended up with a Boss after NC states and I freaking love it. It's great. However, I need that bearing to come out for maintenance, and I need to make sure I can do it when the time comes because we all know that bearings don't last forever.
So, this is my first situation where I have come accross a Yoyofactory yo-yo with a bearing that won't budge.

Freezer = nothing (to shrink the metal up)
Lighter = nothing (to expand the bearing)

My dad then sees my peril, looks at the yo-yo in his infinite wisdom and tells me to look in the bottom drawer of the toolbox for a bottle of penetrating oil.
What's penetrating oil, you ask? Well, just like applying dish soap to a fat woman stuck in a large pipe looking for her lost skittles, it lubricates the parts allowing them to slide off of eachother and just like magic, the bearing popped off with a wiggle of my pliars.

Interesting that after all this time, we never thought that just lubricating the part would make it come off rather easily. After I got the bearing off, I took some sandpaper and wore down the sides of the bearing post a bit so it isn't quite as snug, then put the bearing back on. Now it's easily removable, yet stays put. Nice and snug.

Beats me, give it a shot. Let some oil sit on the area between the bearing and the post and let it sit for about five minutes then give it a pull

For reference, steel has a lower thermal expansion coefficient than aluminum (meaning that it changes in size less than aluminum for a given change in temperature), so you'd only want to try cooling the entire piece to get a bearing off. Heating would just make the fit tighter.

If maintained properly there's no reason a bearing shouldn't last you forever, I have bearings that still spin true and play great from first run hitmen and first run spinmaster 2s..

And, I've enver had a problem with YYF bearings, maybe I just have hulk hands, I don't know, always come out pretty easily for me..
