Small amount of lye + water

I don't suggest trying it unless you want a massive chemical burn mark on your hands and arms and your metal ruined.

Yeah, just send it to a reputable stripper/anodizer.

Oven cleaner will also do it, and it's not half as dangerous.... only issue with it is the fact that you have to use quite a bit of it.

Why do you want a raw yoyo in the first place?
An anodized yoyo will grind better.

And not everyone grinds. I like raw yoyos just because of how slick they look. Whenever I bust out a shiny metallic raw yoyo people always think it's awesome. Raw metal and white both look amazing. But, no white ano.  Cry

the part you would be removing (the dye) is not what makes the grinding different. plus even the actual anodization doesnt really make a difference you can feel. the part of the yoyo that makes them grind well is the beadblasting they do before the anodization

An anodized yoyo will grind better.

FALSE
Anodizing has no effect on grindability. Its the blasting process that makes your surface uneven and more grindable...
As a matter of fact, chemically stripping a polished yoyo WILL improve grinds. If it was already satined, of blasted, there probably won't be a noticeable difference.

That being said, don't do it if you don't know what you're doing. These products won't kill you, but i wouldn't wanna get a splatter in my eyes!!!
And seeing as you actually eat away a yoyo's surface, it may ruin it if you have no experience...

Lastly, it may eat away the ano layer, but depending on the alloy, a dark residu will often form on your surface, for which you need other chemicals to remove...

So you see its not all that easy.

Having it blasted clean may be a better option. But there are also some misconceptions about this. Raw yoyos fresh from the lathe may be sodablasted to a very nice finish. Forget about sodablasting off an ano layer. You need a much more aggressive blasting medium like sand. But more aggressive means more likely to ruin a yoyos smoothness if you don'n know what you're doing...

So yeah,my advice is to leave it to the people who have experience.

It wouldnt be safe to use lye to strip a yoyo, since lye makes a very nasty reaction to aluminum, if make a mistake of leaving it to long or too much lye say good bye to your yoyo.

Here is a video to showing what happens if aluminum is mixed lye (sodium hydroxide)

Thats percisely what they were wanting it to do, controling the reaction is a whole different matter. And I did not know that lye was sodium hydroxide, though it makes sense.

But that was aluminum foil. Yoyo's are made of a few different alloys. I don't think it would be that dramatic at all. It might cause pitting but nothing more.

Well, here is how I do it. When a friend who does not throw wants to try your favorite yoyo and keeps begging until you give in, you hand it to him and show him how to do a simple bind and tell him to stay on the grass. Once he gets it you turn your back long enough for him to make his way to the cement driveway.

Works every time tickedoff
