Idea for a new trick
« on: March 21, 2010, 11:54:48 AM »

Or at least I think it is new. I have been trying to do it for the last day or two, but I am just not skilled enough with whips. I was throwing UFOs the other day to relax my string, but sometimes when I would try to pull it back up it would be unresponsive, and just hang there in front of my face before falling. I realized I had a fast spinning yoyo on its side in front of my face and a ton of loose string while it is in mid-air. I have been wondering if it would be possible to whip the yoyo during an unresponsive UFO pull-up and gain control of it on its side. It could be quite flashy if possible.

I actually got it once, but am having problems getting it consistent (or even doing it again, honestly). What I did was I throw the UFO (the over-hand, string-loosening type), and then I hold my non-string hand up at nearly face level with my thumb up like I am giving a thumbs-up gesture. As I pull up the unresponsive UFO and when it is at face level, I whip the loose string around both the yoyo in mid-air and my thumb. If done right, it basically pulls it into a horizontal brain twister. I didn't spin it fast enough to keep it up, though.

This sounds like a cool horizontal style concept. If you're not aware, a lot of people are doing horizontal combos like from a UFO type throw.

Those guys have some pretty cool horizontal tricks, albeit VERY difficult ones.

I'm most definitely not an expert in horizontal yoyoing, but from what I've heard, it helps to keep the yoyo moving and try to keep the plane even where you're hands are moving.

For that whip, it probably just needs practice (sorry, annoying but true). Maybe try learning some other types of whips (like hooks) or basic "trapeze whips" (something like "laceration" on the expert village vids) and then applying those whips to the sidestyle. Then you can start making your own whips or whatever.

I think some people have done horizontal whips, like Paul Han did a semi-horizontal double-brent stole, at 1:00 in this vid.

Best of luck, hope this was helpful!

Wow, thanks for all the vids and tips! I could be mistaken, as they were all moving very fast, but it appears the top two threw horizontal and then did kind of a horizontal trapeze against something (first vid was his neck, second was his hand, third was a bit hard for me to follow it moved so fast lol). And yeah...I need a lot more practice. I will work on some more basic whips and come back to this one. If I get it down I will make a video and post it to see if others have seen it before. I have only had a modern yoyo for about 3 or 4 days now, so it will likely be a while. Thanks for all the help!

Ya, those probably were a little fast/advanced. THe first guy, a lot of the super fast fronstyle combos were horizontal. You throw, but go in a trapeze by swinging it around like normal, the trick (I think) is to keep both hands at the same plane (like for normal, but more difficult). If you can meet with people in person, a lot of throwers have at least some horizontal and could probably help you out more, it's not the same online.

Very true, and I appreciate the tips! I heard that there was a pretty fair yoyoing community in southeast Texas (I'm in north Houston area), so I may try to get plugged into a club or something Smiley Thanks!
