Basic info? New to the nation
« on: March 15, 2010, 06:30:17 PM »

Hi folks,

I just got hooked from my son getting me a dragonfly from a school fundraiser. SO now I see a bunch of these nation vids, tried a bunch of tricks already, ordered the 2010 888x so I guess I'm in over my head.

Is there someplace that helps you get started throwing sideways- tips etc? where do I find all the names and description for all the crazy tricks I see?

And last- there has to be some of you in Mt view, San Jo. CA?

Thanks, Steve

ahhhh. you bought an unresponsive yoyo already??!!??!!?!?!?!?!?

you need to get like a lyn fury or dark magic or something like that to start out with. both can be made responsive and unresponive if needed. you will have alot of trouble with binding especially on an 888.

go to yoyoexpert.com to learn all the tricks when you start out. btw a sideways throw is called a breakaway

DON'T PLAY THE 888x yet. get a freehand zero and start learning. Once you hit skin the gerbil, and things like that, then break out your 888. and there alot of throwers in California, so i'm sure you'll find one.

Well, to start off, you probably shouldnt have ordered that 888x, modern yoyos are what we call unresponsive and wont come back up to your hand unless you do a trick called a bind. You should try youtube for some helpful tutorials, I use expertvillage tutorials. Theres alot more stuff that alot of other guys will probably tell you. For now you should keep practicing with the dragonfly. Have fun and good luck,

I'm pretty impressed by anyone who can look at a drawing and decide how well the yoyo will play.

Wow a bunch of you guys on here today. Thanks for the encouragement and direction. I will give it a go, If it is too much trouble to jump to it then I will downgrade  or maybe just get the darkmagic and save it for when I get the hang of it.

meanwhile I will lurk like I probably should have before my order Smiley

Don't worry too much about downgrading.  You may still want to get something like a Duncan Freehand Zero to practice with, because it's tug responsive and it lets you spend more time practicing the trick than getting the bind down.  I've been throwing for under two weeks and I throw an unresponsive yoyo (Plastic Grind Machine), and it's no problem for me at all, especially now that I have binding down to a science. Good luck and have fun.  I hope that rethink link helps. The guy does the best angles and there is no dilly dallying to be had within.

Well the 888 showed up today- WOW big gap for the string. I was able to bind 5 or 10 % of my attempts. Seemed it was hard to get a good wind without loops, kept me from getting a good spin. I took out the silicone pads and put in a couple of orings I had at work, binds slightly easier, but still difficult.

I watched alot of vids from both rethink and yo x, helped me so far.

I did order the DM. should be here in the morning - with any luck I can get the hang of it sooner than later.

I also took out the pads and put in a couple of o'rings I had at the shop- that helped only slightly to get it to bind. I'll keep plugging away at it.

BTW is there any thinner bearing available for the 888? that might make learning a bit easier to start and then swap for the fatter one later after I get used to it.

Thanks,
steve

really? Back in 06 the first yoyo i used with a bearing was unresponsive (SFHG), and my friend taught me how to bind within 5 minutes. It's not that hard.

But after that I bought a responsive journey.

Dark magic just came- I cant believe how long this will spin. I can even get it to return! If I throw it hard it wobbles.. Need to get a smooth throw I suppose. Nice overall, now practice  smiley

DM is fun. can bind, trapeze even pulled off a few brain twisters  :-0>

Found sometimes I can yank on the rope as much as I want it wont bind, fortunately I did figure out how to bind enough to make it fun fun fun!

I like how it is weighted and even slowly spinning when you bind it will return.. nice..

Boy I really love the 888 and the precision feel. I can get it to bind 1/2 the time with my oring mod.

Any suggestions on a response mod (for beginners)  maybe silicone stickers from YYN? Cork?

just to make this clear, a bind is when you physically put more string in the gap to make the yoyo return. a just plain return is where you tug the string and the yoyo comes back

Yes that is what I was meaning. When I put in the two o'rings in place of the stock silicone pads, it made the gap much narrower, but now it is not wide enough for basic string tricks without rubbing and slowing it down too fast in my opinion. I am just looking for something in between. Stock I could not get it to return on my attempts to bind.

I guess I am getting off topic. where should I start a thread about tweaking an 888?
