Well, this isn't as bad as I thought it was. I thought that you need to do every trick in the ladder without missing, than after that qualification, you compete in a freestyle. But I was completely wrong. If I am can at leat get to black hops, than I might turn out ok.
If you can "at least" get to black hops, you'll probably win the ladder. Even the top placers at the national championship don't always get to black hops.

As far as I know, pretty much every contest uses the list set by the National Yo-Yo Contest (though they may only use the string trick half): http://www.nationalyoyo.org/videos/I know they update the list every once in a while to reflect new trick styles, etc.

NO 2a ladder. But I do not let freestylers in the ladder.

Sorry to dig up this thread, but it seemed a reasonable place to ask my question.
Several of you have said a "missed bind" counts as a missed trick. I'm wondering whether you mean failing to return the yoyo to your hand after completing the rest of the trick, or having to attempt a bind twice because the first one didn't take, counts as a "miss".
There would certainly be some validity to the latter criteria, but I haven't seen anything in writing that leads me to believe the ladder division demands "seamless execution".
On a similar note, can you walk through steps of the trick, or can/will the judges rule a "missed trick" if you don't perform it to their subjective standard/speed? (e.g. During Gerbil, would pausing after an unwrap before swinging to the throw-hand side be considered a "miss"?)

Pausing on Gerbil isn't a miss. A miss is if you miss something, including a bind.
