Big Brother Wedgie- Review
« on: February 24, 2010, 08:42:46 AM »

I recently was fortunate enough to receive a Big Brother Wedgie and Bully.  Here is a review of the Wedgie.

Packaging:  Like all other Big Brother yoyos, the Wedgie came in what looks like a face cream container.   Inside the container, the yoyo was wrapped in bubble wrap.  On the outside of the container was a label with the Big Brother logo on it, the name of the yoyo, and all of the yoyos specs.  I think this is a very cool way to package and ship yoyos.

Specs:
     Weight:  66.5 Grams
     Diameter:  50 mm's
     Width:  39 mm's

Weight:  The weight on this yoyo is perfect.  To be honest, I was a little afraid it would feel to light.  I actually prefer that boat anchor feel, and like a yoyo that is closer to 68-70 grams.  However, the weight distribution of this yoyo makes it feel like it weighs as much as one of my Project 2's.  I really like it.

Response and Bearing:  Like all the other Big Brother yoyos, the Wedgie comes with a flowable silicone response.  The flowable silicone actually has a texture to it.  I am not sure how they do it, but it creates this circular, kind of wavy line effect on the surface of the silicone.  Because of this, the response on the Wedgie is snappy and tight.  However, it is not grabby or sticky at all.  Even if the string rubs against the wall of the yoyo while it is spinning, it doesn't slow the yoyo down.  This is one of the best response systems I have ever seen.
The Wedgie uses an A size bearing.  Now, let me say something.  I have never been a fan of the A size bearing.  The only yoyos I have with an A bearing are my Duncan FHZ's.  And I almost always use a kk A bearing in them to keep the string from rubbing on the walls of the yoyo.  In my experience, yoyos with an A bearing always have tiny gaps and there is never enough room to do complicated string tricks with multiple wraps.  That being said, I always assumed the tiny gaps were because of the A bearing itself.  It wasn't until I got the Wedgie that I realized that the tiny gaps were because of how the yoyo itself was made.  When I got the Wedgie, I realized that the gap on it was the same size as the one on the Bully; 4 mm's.  I was blown away.  When I started playing with it, I realized I could do everything with it that I could with my P2 or Bully.  I was amazed.  On top of that, the A bearing the Wedgie  comes with is as silent as the dead and spins absolutel.y forever.  It comes clean, dry and unresponsive out of the box.

Play:  For lack of a better way of putting it, the way this yoyo plays is 'mindblowing.'  It feels like it is two grams heavier while it is in play.  However, like it's big brother the Bully, (no pun intended), it will also play as fast as you want it.  I know I sound like I am repeating myself, but for those of us that want that boat anchor feel, it has that.  However, for those of us that want a super fast yoyo like the 07 888 it has that too.  It will go as fast as you push it.  On top of that, the Wegie is the only yoyo that Big Brother has made, as for as I know, that is bead blasted.  And let me tell you, this is the smoothest finish I have ever felt on any yoyo.  Up until the Wedgie, my Project 2 and MarkMont Project from One Drop had the smoothest and best grinding surface I had ever felt.  Not anymore.  The Wedgie doesn't even have a projection profile like the Projects have, and it is still smoother than they are.  This thing absolutely grinds forever.  It never stops.  It is amazing.  The only drawback is that it doesn't actually have an IRG lip.  However, just like on my MarkMont Project, you can still do an IRG grind just by having a little lean to it.  Plus, the other attributes of this yoyo way more than makes up for it's lack of IRG lip.

Final Thoughts:  Just to be quite honest, I think the Wedgie has dethroned the Project 2 as my favorite yoyo of all time.  I cannot put this thing down.  This yoyo will definitely be one of the yoyos I have with me at all times.  If I had to only pick one yoyo to carry with me every where I go, the Wedgie would be it.  Big double props to Big Brother for this work of art and Physics genius.  I most definitely think that everyone should have at least one of these yoyos.  The Wedgie has redeemed the A size bearing.  As my final thought, the Wedgie is one of the best yoyos ever to be made.

Yeah, I love my wedgie. I ended up trading it awhile back, and then re-trading with the same person to get it back lol. Its really that good. And honestly, it really made me appreciate small bearings. But, after experiencing a bunch of other SB yoyos, I hafta say I think the wedgie is the best of them all. Its probably because its gap is wider than most of them, so it rarely snags. But, it still has silicone response and super duper tight binds. It also has little to no kickback, which is great cuz usually SB yoyos with "fake" gaps have lotsa kickback.  Its probably in my top 5 favorite yoyos ever. And its cheap. I hope sometime BBYY comes out with a bb'd version(other than the protos), the etch anodization it has is excellent for grinds, but with a beadblast like the TT has, it would be almost completely unrivaled.
