G5 axle question
« on: January 28, 2007, 01:52:55 PM »

I emailed Ben yesterday and I am still waiting for his answer. I know, 1 day is very short but I'm getting mad not being able to use my G5. tickedoff
I tried removing the bearing but it's stuck on the axle. I tried many of the solutions given on this board but they doesn't work. Cry

I wanted to know if there will be some spare axles for sell because the thread on the axle and the bearing can't be used anymore...

Why do you guys insist on removing bearings from the axle that are pressed fitted? You need  a special bearing press and bearing puller to do the job correctly.I thought the G5 comes with a dorothy bearing that does not need cleaning? If the bearing did need cleaning could you have removed the sheild and thrown the whole axle-bearing assembly in to mineral sprits to clean?

Yeah ^^ also sometimes I just put a drop of mineral spirits in my bearing and go on playing. Works pretty good, but usually I wait a little for the mineral spirits to dry.

I had the same problem man.  I actually bought 2 and on one of them the bearing came right off, but the other one was a no go.

I wrapped a paper towel around the axle and unscrewed it with pliers.  I still had to pound the bearing off though.  Give Ben a couple days, he's a pretty good guy.  Helped me out anyway.   Smiley

I think some of the axles are just a little bigger than others.

Ben provided instructionnal vids to remove the bearing without the bearing press and puller you talk about. Doesn't it mean we should be able to remove it without special gears? This is just my thought.

If I just wanted to clean the bearing I think I would have done so. But as I wanted to put in a kk, removing the bearing was necessary.

Thanks for your advice. I just wanted to know if some players had a clue whether spare axles will be available or not as many of you seem to know some confidential informations wink

I was just voicing my oppion on why can't you guys just play the yoyo the way it is.
I was not picking on you Ash it was general statement.
Okay since none of you have speical tools here is quick lesson on axle bearing  removal of seated bearing. The best thing would to use some type of rubber like a piece of old bicycle inner tube to wrap the axle with then use pliers to remove the axle. Now on to removing the bearing with out a bearing press get a piece of 2 by 4 about 6 inches long piece of wood. Drill a 5/16 inch hole all the way through it.Place the axle in the hole with bearing resting on the hole in the wood.Get your hammer place the inner tube piece on top of the axle so you don't mash down the strater thread on the axle,Now lightly tap the axle through the hole.
The bearing should be sitting on the wood and the axle should fallout when you pick up the piece of the wood. Now to replace the axle center the bearing over the hole in the wood block.
Place the axle in the bearing put the inner tube piece back on top of the axle gentley tap the axle in to place intil centered on the axle.Replace the axle bearing assemble with rubber inner tube piece and the pliers. Now you have a homemade bearing press/remover and a way to safely remove a axle with out stripping the threads.  Hope this helps you all out from making  expensive mistakes when doing maintance on your expensive yoyo's.

I think it's just a matter of preference that people can't play the yoyo the way it is as you said.
The preference can be based on trend, on performance or anything else.
And I think manufacturers understood it by using standard size bearing and providing replacement bearings. Most of the new yoyos come with a C size or A size bearing nowadays. Afro

The bearing is a close fit. Some are tight because the axle may flare a little if over tightened, holding the bearing in place. It is unlikely anyone would flare it on both sides so the bearing should still tap off. A small file will remove the flare once the bearing is removed. The closeness of fit is essential to the smooth spin. This precision was not something we were willing to compromise on this yo-yo.

mineral spirits tends to well... eat away at stuff. i dont reccomend dipping any part of the yoyo besides the bearing in there. especially with those plastic bearing caps if they got any mineral spirits on there it could MELT the plastic.

yes, its that volatile! this is why it cleans everything out of your bearing so well.

mine comes out relatively easy too.. least a lto easier than say.. YYJ's....
