Yo-yos have been around much longer than 1500AD. Most estimates I've seen are that they are 2000-2500 years old, and may be the worlds second-oldest toy (after dolls). The "yo-yo as weapon" myth is generally believed to have originated with the Philippino yo-yo demonstrators of the 1950s to sell more yo-yos.
For what it's worth...

they werent too far from the truth though...ever cracked yourself a good one? yoyos can hurt like hell when your trying NOT to hit yourself, if you were trying to hurt someone with a yoyo its pretty easy. as far as starting out as a weapon, no one knows.

Almost got a councusion from slanted over the head around the worlds with my dm. The string snapped in the middle of the string! Yoyo hit my head and went flying. It's allright though because it gave me a chance to flirt with hot girls that felt sorry for me!

From what I've read, the Greeks created a crude version of the Yo-Yo that was commonly used as a child's sacrifice (something about having to sacrifice a cherished posession). The whole "Yo-Yos as weapons" thing came from a civilization using rocks on the ends of ropes as weapons. Think about it. If you knew about Yo-Yos and you saw someone with that weapon, or someone described it to you, wouldn't you think "Oh! That's a Yo-Yo!"? It's just a common misconception that most people believe.
