Acetone to clean bearings
« on: October 10, 2009, 01:39:38 PM »

Will acetone work to clean bearings?  I have a bunch on hand due to my recent dyeing work and was wondering if it will work well for cleaning as well?  I've been using lighter fluid, but I've recently read that there are additives in it that may not be the best for cleaning bearings...

Regards,
Jake

I've used acetone before and it's ok

I prefer paint thinner but it does work well Smiley

yeah, i've heard acetone described as being too aggressive for cleaning bearings in the typical way that one cleans bearing. I would guess that this means that you have to make sure it doesn't stay in the acetone too long.

So, if I soak it (while swirling) for say 30 seconds to a minute, then blow it out with compressed air, would that be a problem?  Or would I just be better off spending the 5 bucks to get a can of paint thinner?

honestly, i would just get paint thinner, but mostly because i don't know the exact protocol for cleaning using acetone, and 100% mineral spirit paint thinner is known to dry cleanly.

Ok, thanks.  Those are good points.
