Cleaning Problem
« on: October 04, 2009, 11:34:58 PM »

So I attempted to clean one of my bearings today and now it is almost locking up! I used denatured alcohol and trumpet valve oil. The only thing that I can think of doing wrong was drying it. Does denatured alcohol need longer to dry or does trumpet oil not work? Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Use mineral spirits or lighter fluid to clean your bearings and not something you "think" will work. There are things out there that do work.

It's possible what happened is that the cleaning didn't dissolve the grease/oil/dirt that was in the bearing completely.. which typically causes it to actually pile up into larger pieces and cause more problems.

I'd try something like mineral spirits to clean it, as it's well known as being plenty capable of breaking down everything that you're likely to find in your bearing.

as long as the denatured alcohol is water free it's pretty much the same as mineral spirits... read the bottle...and r u using compressed air to dry it before u lube it? try that
