You lube them. It will also make them responsive.

You can, but the bearings wont be quiet.
Here are your choices:
Unresponsive and loud bearing.
or
Responsive and quiet bearing
You can, of course, use a very small amount of thin lube. This will quiet the bearing down a little but wont cause it to become much more responsive. They choice is yours. Just experiment and find what works for you.

How about a smallish amount of lube, then play 5a (because of no whips and responsive is ok) for a hour until it breaks in.

It should be quiet and unresponsive with 2-5 drops of thin lube. That's what I do.

Your words.
I see what you did there. Yeah, I don't think you need THAT much lube, sicyo. It only takes about half a drop (run it off of a pin to make it touch one of the balls in the bearing) to make it quiet, and even then you still need to break it in.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: If you can't play with 2-5 drops of thin lube you need to work on your smoothness.

Well props to you for being so smooth I'm just saying that really seems like a lot. Even 2 drops would coat the insides of the bearing so I don't know why you'd go so much as 5 drops.

Depends on the size of the drops, how big the bearing is, how loud it is, etc. Sometimes you just have a loud bearing that won't shut up.
I dunno it's a ballpark figure, I generally use just 2-3. I guess my point is that you can't really over-do it with thin lube. Whatever is excess will spin/drip out, it's not like petroleum jelly or duncan lube where you have to clean it to get rid of it. Even with keeping all my bearings freshly lubed I still have a ton left in the tiny YYJ bottle, and it's cheap.
