SPYY Pure - Review
« on: June 26, 2009, 05:28:27 PM »

Okay, so I have never really took any interest in SPYY yoyos until I heard so many good things about what SPYY has been doing this year. At NC States, I got a chance to try Ed's prototype SPYY Addiction. Then I knew that I had to own a SPYY yoyo (or 2). I have also been getting into 5A a lot and wanted to try a yoyo specifically designed for 5A. A couple days ago I purchased both the SPYY Pure and Addiction. The Gold plated and Levi painted Pures looked so good, but I knew that I would never want to play them so I bought the standard one.

Shape:   Butterfly / Wing
Weight (g):   66.00
Width (mm):   39.82
Diameter (mm):   53.04
Gap Width (mm):   3.39
Bearing Size (Inside x Outside x Width):   5x11x5 mm Flat Bearing
Gap Type:   Fixed

Aesthetics/Finish:

The Pure looks absolutely amazing. It is all anodized except for the rims and sides. For me, it has a YYJ look which I like. It came in either red or blue. but I chose the red which looks more like a mix between red, brown, and orange. On one of the halves there is the Pure logo that looks amazing. The whole yoyo is beadblasted for smooth touch and long grinds. The whole yoyo is very classy.

Shape/Tech:

The Pure fits nicely in your hand for a perfect throw. It has a small bell-like shape. If your playing 5A your 2 fingers also fit very nicely. The Pure has two pieces of metal that fit onto the side of the yoyos which provide it with more stability. The Pure comes stock with two unknown pads (red and black). It comes with a 5x11x5 flat bearing that I switched out with a KK.

Play:

The Pure plays so well. It grinds well, has tight binds, and a perfect weight. The weight might feel heavy when you hold it, but it floats and glides through tricks. It has a slight vibe, but I don't really care much about that. The Pure is no speed yoyo, but not to slow either. The Pure compliments my style very well too. It is a very stable yoyo that fixes on sloppy throws. On to 5A. For me, I can't seem to find the perfect weight to work with 5A. The Pure has THE weight for 5A and isn't slow when throwing it around. I know the Jon Rob made this specifically for 5A and he did a great job.

Final Thoughts:

I am very happy with SPYY and might pick up some of their yoyos in the near future. The Pure is a must have for both players and collectors. It is my favorite yoyo for the time being and one of the few in my case that I don't feel i need to play, but play with it because I want to. Get one!

strange.... those pads look almost like a diff pad and a one drop sili pad...

are you sure the "red" one isn't clear?

Great review, nice photos. I love the look of this yo-yo. It is deceptive in the fact that it looks much heavier than 66 grams.

By the way, it is a dif and a red silicone sticker. There's no debating, that's what it is.

hmm, I love the overall look of the Pure, but I dont like how the rims and sides are polished. If I get one, im gonna get it annodized purty.

Schuetzie, mine is the smoothest yoyo I've ever thrown. It takes "Spyy Smooth" to a new level.
