"Switch" tricks - String Origami vs. Yoyo movement vol. 2
« on: October 30, 2006, 06:16:11 AM »

Hello!
I may have posted a little about this earlier, and I have included a couple of the tricks in one of my latest vids,
but I thaught I'd make a post about it, to tell the story etc:

Switch is a style I made up a while back, and wich I pull out to play with from time to time.
The reason why I made this up was to add more oportunities to 1A.
Peronally I like tricks that involves string figurs and special yoyo movement patterns.
Switch style gives me a hell lotta new string figurs and movement feels.

"Switch"

The style

The basic idea was to attach the string to the other hand (for a righthander, actually throw lefthand tricks), but THROW and catch with the right hand, and control the tricks with the right hand (as in regular 1A) giving the yo a lefy-back spin, for a righthander).
I have been working with having the loop attached to various places (Other than the right hand). Just throwing a little like 5A.
Different places/different new oportunities.
My favourites are:
-Left hand thumb (attached to the thumb, but middle finger free)
-Left hand wrist (total freedom for all fingers, but not the wrist)
-Belt (total freedom)

Its kinda obvious what is does. And you may find this silly, but if you like playing with gts, new slack tricks, string figurs or anything that has something to do with string complexity, GIVE IT A GO!
I recommend a 6foot string! Normal length seems really short.

What this style gives you, is pure freedom (1A+5A feel)

I have had a smaller conversation with my friend Sideshowbob (who is a hardcore yoyo artist of the oldschool. And who I respect!) who disagreed with my on my statement that this is kind of a "expansion pack" to 1A, that could actually be useful.
I'd say: "Compare it to Möebius"

What do you think?

Does it really open up new doors? ..or do you like to continue on with the lindyloops, somersaults and underpasses that works GREAT!

Here, I'd like to add that I respect anything that has something to do with skills and I your opinion no matter what.
When I first discovered this I simply just couldnt stop playing with it Smiley

lol, now I expect at least one of those: "Why not attach the string to your foot, and do CRAAAZY STUfF! n TricKs!" or or, what about TO ANOTHER PERSON!!! or you could have likeTWO strings.. one from you ear peircing to your moms shoelace, then one attached to your belly button to your laft hand, OPENS UP NEW DOORS!! LOL

..I'd say: "Try it"

I have some Mobius tricks where I'll have the knot slide back onto my otherhand/different parts of the hand (thumb and left middle are my only two good ones, but I've tried a few.) and continue doing things from that knot placement. Doing 5a without a counterweight, or doing tricks with the string off the finger but not in mobius form, is called slippery eel, though I think what you're doing is a little different. If I take it right, you're moving the knot toa  different place, and then continuing to do regular string tricks. Of course it's been done before, but more jokingly, and it'd be cool to see someone advance in it seriously. Lately I've been playing with weird styles, Mobius, behind the wrist, and something that I thougth I came up with, but of course Doc Pop has done it before, which is mobius opened up in the knot of a 5A set up. Maybe I'll try some more unique slip knot placements, as you've mentioned, for kicks and giggles.

Edit: In fact, I think I have a trick that pretty much fits your description, though I've never seen any of your vids, maybe I'll record it...

came up with a weird style a while ago not sure what to call it but its 1A but you have another string with a counter weight attached to the string already on the yo the way you would attatch it to a yo.... if that makes sense...

so basicly you have 1 A but 2 strings one attached to the other string that slides along the other freely, got this idea from astro but yeh... not got anywhere real with it...

Cool, I'll check some of them out. I love innovative stuff, or just weird styles. Here's one of my tricks that slip onto my left hand, minus the doc pop behind the wrist thing at the end. http://www.yoyoing.com/videos/play.php?vid=2510
