GlowDoug's Glow in the dark string review
« on: January 28, 2009, 12:53:40 AM »

Hello Nation  Afro
I'm pretty sure most of you guys on here saw GlowDoug's thread about the string that he makes. Looks like this:

I managed to get some from the man himself, even before he'd posted that thread, so I'm gonna do what i can to write up a review for it. never really done on before, but i'll do my best, so here we go.
When i first got the string, it felt kinda like angel hair string, but softer and almost like the way alchemy strings feel, just a little rougher, so its a nice middle ground.
Here are some comparison pics between this string and others for reference:

left to right, Glow String, Angel Hair, Alchemy

left to right, Glow String, YYN HighLights, SSE G-String, type 8 slick string
Having said this, just as both alchemy and angel hair require, there is some break in time for this string. Also much like alchemy and angel hair, this string is great for all kinds of whips, slacks and suicides. however, this string does require you adjust string tension a little more often than you do with other strings. Other than that though, this is really great playing string, and it will last a very long time in nonresponsive yo-yos*** as I've been playing it in my siliconed FHZ for a little over two weeks now, and they are still holding up great.

Now, onto the fun glowy part  Grin
The string is available in three different glow in the dark colors: blue, pink, and white.
I was truely amazed at how little it takes to get this stuff to glow. you can literally lay these strings under a lamp for a few seconds, turn off all or most of the lights in the room, and just watch it shine. But if you'd like it to really glow, i'd suggest leaving them under a light for a 1/2  hour or so (use a flourescent bulb n save energy if you want) or hold them under direct light at only a few inches away (also use a flourescent bulb so as no to burn your hand; if you dont have one, just let them sit under the light.) In the dark, these strings look stunning. Whips, slacks and really any tricks that will move the string in a circular motion or in odd manuvers look great. (double and triple hooks and wrist whips, revolutions, braintwister, and whut?, wrist mount variations, {insert other fun spinny flippy whippy trick here}, ect.) Here are two sets of pics, the corresponding pictures haven't been moved or altered between shots so you can tell what string glows what color.

So, overall, I think this is a really great yoyo string that many people will enjoy. Lasts long, is great for whips, and freakin GLOWS IN THE DARK!!!  shocked
Shoot GlowDoug a PM if your interested, he's a great guy.
ans also please let me kno what you guys think of my first review  Afro
Thanks and enjoy,
CJ.

*** i've been told by GlowDoug that these strings will break when used with Chaz Pads, I've currently only tried using them with silicone response yoyos, and have had no problems. Therefore i can only guess other response systems will support the use of these strings fine, but i'm am not 100% sure. probably a good question to PM GlowDoug about. No problems confirmed with chaz pads as of yet, play on chaz pad users, play on

hmm...I used them with my glow pads and it frayed them to a breaking point, if you a have a yoyo that you don't mind  getting dinged up.. try them with chaz pads...i would like to know this for sure.
Thanks

Great review

unfortunately i cannot give you a definitive answer about that Chuck, the only non-glow chaz pads i have are stationed in my black death, and they are pretty worn down so i cant really say how they play with the string, because they are slipping just a tad too much to really get decent throws out of it...

Hey CJ,
Thanks for the good words on the string and I'm glad you like them.  I'm going to be a little biased but I think that this is a great first review. Good job!  Very nice pictures too.  Afro

As for the problem using the glow string with Chaz Pads, Chuck is correct.  I can only say that there was a problem with the glow pads.  Since then I have had much better luck with the glow pads by taking a pencil eraser to them to kind of break them in and greatly reduce the abrasiveness.  I do not know if the combination of the glow string and standard Chaz Pads is a problem.  If someone tries it out please let us all know.

Just to clarify a point about the glow string and Chaz pads.  The only problem occured when the string was used with the glow Chaz Pads.  The glow in the dark powder that Chuck used in the manufacture of the pads made the pads rather abbrasive.  There have not been any problems using the glow string with standard Chaz Pads, any other pads, or silicone.  Also, I reduced the string tension by about 20% based on feedback and personal experience.  In my opinion, this small change helped make the string a little more flexible and better playing.  Maybe CJ can give his opinion on the new formula.  Smiley

Doug's Glow String Version 2 are simply amazing. The minor adjustment that he made by lessening the overall string tension worked to perfection, yet they still glow with retina burning intensity. I find that this new formula holds tension much better as well, making it better for slacks, and suicides as well. Hit up Doug if up you want to try some, they are great.

The string is nice, glowing more than i expected^^
I think this will be my first and only glow string that i will have.

One thing that i should have asked is the length of the string because i wanted a long string.
But i was too excited to get the glowing string so i totally forgot. zzz

I wouldnt complain no more,
Because its too good^^

Hey Yukimochi,
I'm glad that you like the string and I hope it works out well for your show.  My standard string finishes out at about 43 inches long.  I could certainly make it longer if you need it.  Let me know!

I got a couple pieces of Doug's string in a trade and immediately LOVED it.  Alchemy is the string I find myself going back to more than any other and this string reminds me so much of Alchemy.  SUPER whippy and VERY durable.  It's great for all types of slack tricks, and you can get tons of layers in the gap without worrying about snagging.  I really thought because of the glow this was going to be a gimmicky string, but it's not.  It performs just beautifully.  The glow is a bonus - it glows SO brightly.  Actually I was playing in direct sunlight and when I got out of the direct sunlight you could see the hint of a glow in a fully lit room.  So cool.

Needless to say, I immediately tracked Doug down and placed an order that was filled quickly and professionally (and NICE packaging!).  One more thing - Doug didn't request payment until my string was made and ready to ship, so I got my string within about 4 days of payment.

Excellent product and an excellent transaction - thanks Doug!

Got three of each color,  didn't think they would play real good,  got em for the glow thing.  I was wrong.  They preform great, slacks, whips, tight binds and they feel good.  Oh the glow thing,  I put the white on my raw polished 888, looks kinda bland at first outside,  but when I bind it up the gap looks radioactive,  green fire.  Way cool, a must have.

This string looks awesome, what with all the radioactivity.  It's probably quite safe to carry a yoyo wrapped with this stuff in one's front pocket daily.  Right there.  Next to your nads.  Over time.

The relatively weak radio-isotopes used for glow-stuff have been used in kids' toys for decades now.  And kids (and former kids) seem no worse for it, right?  It follows, the chances of significant chromosome mutation, or any danger to your nads are probably quite small.  Tiny.

No, seriously, I will be buying some of this cool string!

Hey Bud,
This string is not radioactive even in the slightest way.  I believe that there are very few radioactive consumer items still on the market.  Some of the radioactive items still on the market include Tritium gun sights and the hands on some expensive watches.  These items use a radioactive isotope that is mixed with a phosphor to create a product that does not require charging from an outside source to energize the glow effect.

This string and other glow in the dark toys use one of two types of phosphors; Zinc Sulfide or Strontium Aluminate.  Strontium Aluminate is the newer and brighter of the two phosphors and is probably what is used in this string and other brightly glowing yoyos such as the Glow Duncan FHZs.

Bottom Line... Your nads are not in any jeopardy from my string  (aside from the ever present entanglement hazard.)**

** Just to be safe, I'll add a Nad Safety Warning to the packaging.   Wink

Ha ha.  A Nad Safety label.  Maybe in the shape of an acorn or walnut.  No, no, modern glow-stuff is completely safe (cell phones, not so).

How do I order your glow string?

Respectfully,
Bud

As soon as I found out Doug was making string that glows I knew I had to have some! This stuff is great. It has a slick feeling and its stiff. It lasts a super long time, Ive only been using it for 2 days but it hasnt changed even a tiny bit. It plays great and looks amazing! Everyone should try it!
