I was talking to John Huber on AIM today and he pointed out that almost all of us yoyo players have an opinion on one another. But what is the point? Here is the convo: John: I've just been hearing and reading a lot of people hating on other people, not just in yo-yoing. I'm getting burnt out on it.
Me: Yeah, well I'm going to try to stop criticizing unless it's constructive criticism.
John: I feel like I'm one of the very few people in the community right now though. Seriously. Everybody has an opinion on everybody else. I just don't care. We yo-yo, that should be enough.
Me: True that, I wish i could think that way.
John: If every yo-yo player in the world had the back of every other yo-yo player, we could be a force to be reckoned with.
Me: Heck yes!
John: It's a secular hobby. We should all have respect for one another. Regardless of style, age, religion, or anything else. WE SPEAK A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE! So yeah, this thing really hit me, and I started thinking to myself "what is my problem?" So what do you think?

in my experience, yoyoing has been the kind of thing that brings people together in ways that they wouldn't otherwise. I have definitely gotten tight with people that i probably wouldn't have associated with otherwise and it has made it easy to overlook ideological differences on other fronts.
on the other hand, any beef that i would have with any other players over the years has nothing to do with yoyos as a concept. i guess sometimes relationships break down in spite of something that unites you. that can definitely be heartbreaking.
we could all use a little more understanding in our diet.

I'm no saint. I know I've contributed to the negativity in the past.
Oh, and I wasn't trying to say that we shouldn't have opinions of other players. Constructive criticism is an essential ingredient of improvement. But I do think that there has been a lot of players hating on other players within the community... And as the community has grown, I've seen a lot more of it going on. Some people have perpetuated it. Some of the new players have been alienated by it. It hasn't done anything positive for the yo-yo community though, IMHO.
We're ALL yo-yo players here. If you can't have mutual respect for one another, regardless of skill level, age, or anything else, then maybe you should find a new hobby.

People just generally do not get on with each other. Spend enough time with anyone, even your best mate and eventually they will annoy you. Add the anonymity of the internet and social graces degrade even further. Add to that the fact that yoyo boards are frequented by many youngsters, who are generally more insulting to each other in real life than adults. Add to that the limitation of written text and language as a means of expressing ourselves. And all the other stuff I havnt thought of. Some people take it more seriously than others, some of it is meant more seriously than the rest. Its the same everywhere. Best not dwell on it eh!

Well said, Jack. The one thing I've loved about this community, from the very beginning, is the wide variety of people who are a part of it. Nowhere else have I ever experienced such a diverse crowd of people. NOWHERE. Yo-yo players defy social barriers. We literally do speak a language of our own... And I see the hating on each other as hindering what makes this community great. And as for the last sentence, that's going in my sig.

Arguments happen. No two people can get along perfectly 24/7. That's just how it is. But bashing on other players, for whatever reason, doesn't have a place in this community. There's a big difference between the two.

Agreed. If Jack Rinca and I can hang out and not want to kill each other over politics and religion, then Yo-Yoing must be doing something right. I love Jack! *He's doin it ta Thrillar!* Man that cracks me up every time I think about it.
