Absolute Basics... The Throw.
« on: December 11, 2005, 09:56:34 PM »

I've been yoing for a good few weeks now. Although I've gotten fairly consistent with the trapeze, and I'm getting better with the 2or0, I feel that my throw is a bit sloppy at times. It may be tilted forward or back slightly, or angled out away from my body rather than parallel with my shoulder plane.

I know that the throw is the most important thing for successful tricking, so I'm looking for some details and tips on this seemingly simple bit of yo-dom. I know it's going to be opinion and personal preference, but anything helps.

First, how do you hold the yoyo? Are there any tips or tricks here that can help keep the throw straight? I've been throwing with my thumb in the groove and it seems more stable at times. I'm thinking that thumb positioning here can help give it the right angle, but I haven't found a consistent sweet spot.

Next for side-style tricks, should the yoyo be traveling right at parallel to the shoulder plane? Or, should it be angled out at all? If I have my feet shoulder width apart, should the yoyo travel over both my toes?

Also along the same lines, how far away from the body should the yoyo be? When you're tricking, are you constantly having to make adjustments to keep the yoyo from getting too close or too far away from you?

I'm quite sure I know the answers to these questions generally. I'm just looking for those little tips that really help.

Any other good tips for getting good, consistent throws - of course, other than "Just practice dood!"? I already know that one.  Smiley

Thanks,
Jason

I tend to throw the string and not the actual yoyo, centrafugal (if thats how you spell it) force will straighten the yoyo.

But as annoying as it sounds... It IS just practice to geta a better throw. I watch hundreds of different yoyo clip videos featureing many different yoyoers and they ALL throw differently!

There is no 'correct' way of throwing, you just have to find a way that suits you and your playing style.

me too. if you hold on to the yoyo too long, your bound to screw up the throw.
