Dice Hubstacks (review)
« on: November 13, 2008, 11:39:46 PM »

So, thanks to Ben giving me the hookup I got some dicestacks. Wish I woulda known he was sending them, so then I wouldn't have ordered some last night. I was only expecting the regular hubs missing from my G5 box, but he ended up giving me a little variety pack that include 2 pairs of dice hubs. Black and red. So I decided to write a review because he said that they were fragile. Now I see why. First off, pics.

The 2 pairs next to each other.

Comparison with regular hubs. Side and top views.

The black pair.

Fitted on the G5.

So, on to the stacks. For the most part they do act like the regular stacks, with a little more flare. On the sides they are thinner than the round hubs, and on the corners wider. The hole on the top is smaller. The dice just feel slightly bigger in your hand, they have a pretty nice feel when holding by the stacks, plus they look really nice.

Onto the fragility. My red ones appear to be for the most part solid. But both stacks have week points on the sides. The part where the bearing goes, the dice stacks are thinner than with the regular hubs. Especially on the sides where there are dots in the center of the dice. (ex: 1,3,5). Any breakage on the dice is probably going to occur in these spots. My red pair are in tact, but the black ones have holes either on the 5, 1, or 3 sides. One has a hole on the 1 and 5 sides, and the other has a hole on the one. Also, one of the black ones came with a crack on the one side that goes from the bottom edge all the way to the top and to the hole. So I am afraid to put these on as it will probably completely break in half. Which is a shame because I really would like the black ones on my G5 instead.

I still think the red ones that were for sale last night were a good buy, seeing as how they seem to be sturdier. And they do look nice on the yoyo. Hope everyone enjoys theirs, when they come.

Got the one I ordered, and 2 of them actually have holes on the sides. No where nears as big as the ones in my black pair, no cracks though. The new ones happened to to be identical in the side that was carved through. They all have the 6 on top. Really wish they had the 5 on top, I just like how that looks better. It's fine though. I hope everyone else's are received in good shape.

So I imagine taking the dice stacks on and off a lot will increase the chances of it cracking?

Dang... I happen to be a very fickle person when it comes to hubstacks.

I did manage to get these on Wednesday, but maybe I should have gotten the long stacks and top tips instead since I thought the dice would be bigger than that and easier to catch.

Ah, well, we'll see when they come.

I've had to take my red ones on and off quite a bit thanks to my O-rings popping off for some reason. Haven't cracked or anything yet. And I was wrong about the orings not falling out of the hole. They can when they're no on the nub and are normal sized. Gonna correct that now.

I just finished trying out my dice hubstacks and wanted to warn anyone that might want to put them on their Plastic Grind Machine that it might not work too well, and may scuff up that plastic nipple post that the hubstack rests on.  The exposed edge of the pips caused by the dice being cut into two are somewhat sharp, and I think due to bad luck, line up just about where the edge of the plastic post is, so when they spin, I found that at least on my PGM, the edge catches, and causes some bad scuffing, and on one of the sides, hindered the spinning of the hubstack.  I'm relatively certain I've installed them correctly, but if anyone has any ideas on if this can be fixed, or if anyone's found a similar problem with their dice hubstacks and PGMs, I'd be interested to hear.
