Tuning A Busine$$?
« on: October 19, 2008, 08:03:54 AM »

My business unscrewed itself during play and frankly it was scary  shocked

Can someone tell me how to tune the business?

I really want to have it buttery smooth with no vibe and for it to screw together tightly.

This is how I tuned and set my: Bape, Business, Bone-Chip and Plug-In 3.

Count threads so that you know how many turns to perfectly center the axle into one half of the yo-yo.

Use threadlocker blue (aka loctite) to set the axle in this half and use an older bearing to make sure that the axle is propped upright. Let it set for 24 hours. Make sure that you don't loctite in the end of the bolt that has the allen screw hole as you might want to later remove the axle. Don't use threadlocker red, it is far too hard to undo.

Use plumber's teflon tape to help keep the other half of the yoyo on. Screw the yo-yo halves firmly together, don't over tighten as that could strip the threads. Plumber's tape looks like a piece of flat ribbon, available at hardware stores in the plumbing supplies aisle. Some people use plumber's tape for both halves instead of threadlocker blue.

There's one thread.

I think you know what I mean. I suppose I could have used the word "teeth" but I stand by my use of the word "threads".

From: http://www.nmri.go.jp/eng/khirata/metalwork/basic/bolt/index_e.html
"The "Pitch" of the tread is another important feature of a thread. The pitch is defined as the interval (distance) between adjoining threads. e.g. Nuts & bolts must have the same pitch as well as diameter if they are going to be used together."

And from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Thread_Standard
Each thread in the series is characterized by its major diameter Dmaj and its pitch P. UTS threads consist of a symmetric V-shaped thread. In the plane of the thread axis, the flanks of the V have an angle of 60° to each other. The outermost 1/8 and the innermost 1/4 of the height H of the V-shape are cut off from the profile.

The pitch P is the distance a screw advances during a 360° rotation. It is related to a TPI (teeth per inch or threads per inch) figure by...

Here is how I tuned mine: I threw it in the garbage.

A day later I retrieved it from the garbage after realizing I would never throw money in the garbage.

I am trying a new method that I like to call "the dust method". How it works is that I never, ever play it, despite the fact the axle is perfectly tuned with tape so it has absolutely no vibe. My hope is that after not playing it for most of my life, when I eventually play it again, it will somehow be to my liking.

i tune axles a different way. i cut a strip of teflon tape or whatever you use so that it is the same width as the bearing. i then tape it around the middle of the axle making sure that it dead centre. you can do this by matching the number of turns in the thread, either side of the tape. this will make the axle centred from the very centre of the yoyo, which is the bearing.

What I did is I put teflon tape on each side extremely thick and put a bit around the center(single layer) and would turn one side once, then the other etc etc and if one side would thread instead of the other when I turned it, I would start all over. The whole process of perfectly centering it made it play very very smooth, but it also made me hate it more because of subjecting myself to said process. I honestly have no idea why I went through so much trouble to tune a yo-yo that I hate. Oh wait, yes I do because people were all like: "when you tune it it is like, so amazing". Mythbusted. Just my opinion though.
