My take on the DV8
« on: September 14, 2008, 12:26:29 PM »

As many of you know, I have been collecting Menehune shells for a mod.  Here's what I have done:

Had custom rings made at a local machine shop
Recessed the Menehune shells to take the rings
Silicone recess into the body of the Menehune and added schmoove rings
Recessed the axle hole to accept Duncan spacers, then recessed the body of the Menehune to take a SPYY/HSpin size bearing

My take on the DV8 is a little wider than a regular DV8 (see pictures below).  Weight is almost the same at around 63-64 grams.

Results?

Regular DV8 is in the middle (thanks to Gracieyoyogirl!)

Gut check!  Silicone recess and schmoove rings

I have a few red ones finished if anyone is interested.  Once I finish up with Zammy's Black Death project, I will be making more of these babies in both red and marbelled blue.  Smiley

Specs:
Width: 44 mm
Diameter: 49.3 mm
Gap width: 4.0 mm
Weight: 65 grams w/o string
Bearing: 5x11x5 mm

Does it play at all even close to a real DV8 though?

Regular DV8 uses Buzzon SPR like this one:

Does it play at all even close to a real DV8 though?

Very similar.  A bit wider, so a bit less forgiving on a bad throw.  Little bit of vibe, similar to the regular DV8.  I have chamfered the edges of the rings and polished the rings up a bit, so the edges aren't quite as sharp as a standard DV8.

There are 7-8 of these out there if anyone who has one would care to comment...

I got a red one.

I starting to like it.

There is a vibe.

To me its kinda shaped like a wider, lighter Project. The weight rings fit in a project if they are wraped in a post-it note.

It plays fast and strong, but comes back with a nice tight bind. It's silicone really helps.
The control is great.
One thing that I really notice is how quiet it seems. Besides the bearing this yo yo is silent.

8.5/10 for me

Rice rocket you should offer to sell an extra pair of weight rings with this yo yo. (I think the name of the yo yo should really be the BL8, or RL8) THat way the weight can be change.

I'm one of the owner's. Here's my input:
Love the way it's pretty (very) fast, yet my particular one is weird with wobble. Can't seem to get it out. It was fine though earlier, don't get me wrong. I just kinda dinged it....

Hey chris, do you have any tips for tuning this bad boy?

Just spoke to the machinist who made the rings for me.  He's working on another 50 sets of rings for me!   shocked

Also have 20 sets of blue shells and 10 sets of red shells patiently waiting for me to get to them!
