What if there were no hypothetical questions?

Have you ever made a yoyo with a 3D printer?
« on: April 13, 2008, 05:47:19 PM »

I don't have access to my school's CNC machines yet, but I might get a chance to make a yoyo with a 3D printer. Unfortunately, I have never used a 3D printer before. So, my idea is as follows: make the yoyo really thick and/or never play with it, so that it doesn't break. Because I will never be able to put a threaded hole in the design, I will put a smooth hole in the design and use a nut and a bolt as the axle. Oh, this will not be a good yoyo.

At the very least, I intend to make a counterweight with the 3D printer.

Thanks sounds so cool.  When the printers prints, what medium is used to build up the layers?  I'm sure that some of the people on the board are technical enough they should be able to help with the design process so that you can translate that into a "printed" 3d yo.  Promise us you will show us pictures and blog about the process.  I know you would like the yo to come out perfect, but even if it doesn't this could be a really fun project for the rest of us to share in via the cyber world.  And you might get some really go advice and help along the way.

I look forward to your telling us about the project and process.

And most of all--have fun with this project Afro

I think I might use two nuts and a threaded rod, that way the two halves can use an identical seat for the nut, and I will be able to center the threaded rod. I bolt might have stuck out one end and created asymmetry.

Yes, I have. I made 2 yoyos on a 3d printer. Don't waste your time.

I've made yoyos on 3d printers in everything from abs to polycarb..

It's "ok" at best for prototype work, and it's not much cheaper than just making it in metal to begin with, or machining it from delrin.

3d printers definitely have their place, but not so much for our purposes.

yah that is a prototyping sort of deal... if the one you get to use is anything like the ones i've used its just not going to be durable enough...

Just a side note, these printers cost moneysss. Our school's printer was over 25 thousand.
