Acceptable song in contest?
« on: February 05, 2012, 04:14:48 PM »

I was wondering how people feel about this song:
<div><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/q7N7zgxE0Is&amp;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&amp;rel=0" width="425px" height="344px" wmode="transparent" quality="high" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="never" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" autoplay="false" autostart="false" /><noembed><a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/q7N7zgxE0Is&amp;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&amp;rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/q7N7zgxE0Is&amp;ap=%2526fmt%3D18&amp;rel=0</a>

Would this be acceptable to use in a contest in terms of what is appropriate or not.

Opinions?

I think it's fine. Songs with just as much suggestive lyrics have been used in the past, have they not?

I personally don't see an issue with this, but I could see a parent with a young child at a contest being upset by something like this.

I love that song! I would put these in my DJ mixes I make at home for personal pleasure but I can't mix it right 'cause I suck.
I don't think it'd be a problem. Tons of songs that are 'acceptable' in contests have a lot of double-entrende anyway.

I think you would be fine, but to be safe I would send it off to a contest coordinator and let them listen just to be sure.  Smiley

I think its fine, if the yoyo conests is held in a nightclub, is it 44 clash ?
If its held anywhere around children, and you feel like giving all the parents with children there the big metaphorical middle finger, as your up there performing your heart out, by all means go for it.
The rule is there for a reason, if people do not notice, and or sneak stuff by, that is one thing, and always happens, but is that how you want to be percieved ?
I hate censorship of any form, on principal.
But this isnt someone enjoying something for their own personal benefit, this is a contest held in  public space, so ??
 To flip the coin....
I watched Sebastian freestyle, I didnt even notice the lyrics, but , I dont know the song, that makes a difference. I think honestly, most people in this case would be the same, most wouldn't even notice the lyrics, but some will, and all it takes it one person to raise a stinkfist.
Its all about the audience Josh, and how you want to be perceived,  I think you know that, you also know it isnt really appropriate for a kids contest.
There is also the fact  that youve posted about it on the two major forums, for that reason alone I wouldnt do it,  or I would get prior written permission. If not...some dinkface can use it to specifically make your day miserable.
You could take the lyrics out with a karaoke app, but then all the fun is gone isnt it ?
Personally I love the song, but I just dont think some parents would agree.

I was wondering how people feel about this song:

it makes me feel like punching babies.
god that was awful. the beat at the beginning was nice, but then words came, and it became terrible.

sorry dude. Lyrically its whatever, but would you honestly even WANT to freestyle to that?
part of performance in my opinion is how the audience (and by that respect, judges) perceives the music being freestyled to. if everyone hates it, you're most likely not gonna have people's attention.

just my 2 cents, i'll go find my flame retardent suit now.

What's the rule with songs that have curses, but are blanked out-censored versions. I realize it'd be fine with like 1-2 curse words blanked out, but is there an area where they draw the line on songs, even if they're censored?

very very dirty song! imo, doesn't seem very appropriate for a yoyo contest. but then again I'm not a parent, so I wouldn't really care

god that was awful. the beat at the beginning was nice, but then words came, and it became terrible.

I like that song and didn't like Jude Law and a Semester Abroad, so to each their own.
I'm pretty sure this song has been used before on a video linked by yoyoskills without the lyrics warning. So there's an interesting data point.

Personally, I'm fine with the song, it's a perfectly entertaining song, and there have been some far more suggestive songs used in past contests, just that most people didn't notice. There's no swears, and quite frankly the prologue from The Cantebury Tales has much more suggestive imagery and that's taught in schools (same with Shakespeare, see Petruchio and Kate in Taming of the Shrew).
