« on: February 04, 2012, 08:44:05 AM »

the subject title pretty much says it all. i just bout a light of fhz cause ive always wanted a light up yoyo. cause its cool lol. but i was wondering if there is any way or mod so that it can fit a C bearing for less responsive play cause i wanna be able to do longer more technical tricks with it to impress people lol Afro. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First off, switching to a C bearing will not do much for making your FHZ less responsive. That is, not more than just switching to a better response system (adding a silicone recess or pads that are less grippy than silicone stickers) and cleaning the stock bearing. Switching to a C bearing will, however, drastically change the feel of the yo-yo.

If a little larger bearing diameter and gap width is what you are after, converting a Duncan yo-yo to a D bearing is really easy and requires no extra parts other than the bearing itself.

If you still really want to put a C bearing into it, your best bet would be to pick up a pair of YoYoFactory's C bearing spacers (the same ones used in the PGM, Protostar, etc.) and get those recessed into the yo-yo.

Can't use those because of the pad recess.  What you would have to do is recess in Crucial Spacers.  Something that would be quite hard to do without a lathe.  Also, just changing the bearing size of the yoyo won't make you any better.

Can't use those [YYF spacers] because of the pad recess.

I don't see why the recess would affect anything. The stock recess is not very deep and the walls are fairly thick. A simple facing pass will remove the recess.

ehh. I wouldn't agree with that.
you still have to make a cut in the yoyo to accomodate for the larger bearing if you want it to perform well. sure you CAN just throw one in, but the results wouldn't be promising i'd imagine. and given the already there pad recess, converting to even a D-sized bearing would be a multi-step process, to the point where you may as well do the extra work required to use a c-sized bearing.
just my 2 cents.

Be sure to try it using only one response sticker, it works very well for giving a nice unresponsiveness.
You also might consider the Chico Anything Kits(CAK's), sold by Chico yoyo, basically like the hub of an aluminum yoyo you can drop into plastics or woods or other metals. it is also very similar to the Crucial set up that is sold, but I prefer the price of the CAK.
If a person worked carefully I am positive this could be dropped in with a drill recess. You would need to be very careful to maintain the center, but especially here as you are replacing the axle, so if its off by a hair it'll be vibe city I imagine.
Might be cheaper to just get someone like Jeff Pang to mod it, he does a really nice FHZ with the Crucial kits.
Good luck, it can be done if you want to do it, but if you have not tried the FHZ with one sticker try it.

well i cleaned my bearing and removed a sticker and its much better. im gonna buy some silicone pads too. also would buying the duncan spacer kit thing that  they sell give me the proper spacers to make the gap wider cause thats another thing that i think i would like better just cause im used to the feel of having a wider gap since all of my other yoyos are pretty wide( dv88, rockstar, fft starlight and a y factor but the gaps not as wide)

You couls just drop in a Terrapin X Wide Gap Freehand YoYo Bearing.
It opens the gap 2mm and it's a wing cut.

You could send me a personal message...

Standard beefcake A size bearings adds 4mm to the gap and you get that annoying string snagging notch in the middle

I did it. I trimmed each half down .030" first to eliminate the pre-recessed, so it was like a slim line FHZ.

Pictured are 2  C size wing cut "beefcake" bearings.
The third bearing (red dot) shows the grove that usually occurs with 2 regular bearings ( Red V).
The TX wide gap FH bearings are cut the same way with 2 slim A size bearings, opening the gap 2mm. more then stock.

Yeah i understand what you mean.. but i've never had any snagging on my tricks from the groove between the bearing.
Even if the string gets proper well jammed in the gap, both bearings still spin fine.

idk what you're doing if you get snags

I agree that I've also never experienced snagging issues with a beefcaked setup. In fact I find the beefcaked setup to be more reliable than a CT or KK, which I do get nasty snage from when doing a lot of direction changes.
