Trick Elements
« on: February 02, 2012, 01:03:46 PM »

Hey, guys!

I've been building a new website (edit: not CyberYo.com) for the yoyoing community for a couple of months now, and I need your help. As one of the 3 sections of the site, I'm creating a categorization system for trick tutorials that is completely different from anything used before. I've created a new system of categorizing tricks (in addition to the traditional system of 1A,2A...) that includes some of the newer styles such as Mobius and Soloham, and also gives you the ability to not only select the trick style and difficulty you want, but also to select tricks that have certain elements in them, such as "Advanced 1A" and then "Green Triangle". I'm also going to include the trick axis of play (frontstyle, sidestyle, Paul Kerbel/Banana Turnover style) as x, y, and z axis, respectively. Also, on each tutorial page there will be related videos that are based on the elements, difficulty, and style of the trick you're watching, so you can easily find the next trick you want to learn.

I'm building this to solve the problem that I have often faced when trying to find a new tutorial: you click on, say, "Advanced 1A" and there are a ton of cool trick names listed, but you have no idea what the tricks are. You then have to click on each video and watch it to see if it's something you even want to learn. The system I'm designing doesn't completely solve that problem, since it still doesn't know what tricks you want to learn, but it does allow you to filter through that list faster by narrowing it down to elements you enjoy or want to learn.

So, here's where I need your help! I know creating an exhaustive list of elements is impossible, but if as many of you that want to help could post a listing of elements you know of (as well as a short description of each or a link to a video so I'll know how to use them in the system) that would give me a huge head start. Also, I need elements for every style (1A - 5A), so please specify next to the element name what division(s) it belongs to.

I'll give you a few to show you what I'm talking about: (I'm terrible at describing this stuff, so hopefully you'll be better at the description part than me, haha!)

Whip (1A,4A) = Slack is formed and "whipped" onto the yoyo
Wrap (1A,2A) = The string wraps around some part of the body, usually an arm
Green Triangle (1A,3A,4A,5A) = Don't know how to explain this one, but I think everyone knows it anyway =)
Red Triangle (1A) = A green triangle that allows you to drop it without a knot
Fold (1A,5A) = For example, from a 1 1/2 mount, take the upper string and push it forward and completely around the yoyo
Gyro (1A,3A) = The yoyo makes a 360 degree turn on its z axis
Kink (3A) = The strings of both yoyos are crossed in the middle, forming an "X"

etc.

Like I said, this is a big job that I'm willing to take on, and I don't expect to create an exhaustive list, but I thought you all would have valuable input as I work. =) It will also help me use the correct terminology, because I might make up a name for something when it already one.

To give a sneak peek of what I'm building, it will have a highly customized tag system for freestyle videos, clip videos, and tutorials. It's like the "yoyoing.com video site" of old, just integrated with YouTube's and Vimeo's SDK instead of hosting the videos on my server... so look forward to having all of the yoyo videos you want in one place, and being able to search for the words "Mickey" and "Red" and actually get videos of Hiroyuki Suzuki and Rafael! =) Also, no longer will yoyo videos be split across channels and even whole sites like YouTube vs. Vimeo. Players will be able to submit videos to help me build the database, and all videos will be checked and moderated for accuracy, quality, and relevancy. As players submit videos, they earn points that they can trade in for yoyos and gear!

Hopefully launching in March to some capacity... =) Thank you so much in advance for helping out!

Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:7-8

Greetings! I like the website at first, but I'm wondering if it's even okay to use the image of the Protostar, a YoYoFactory product and property, into your website. And I'm sure that it's not in any shape or form. Though putting the Protostar in place of the O was nice, I'd suggest that you get rid of the Protostar image in your logo to prevent any legal troubles with YYF. I'm pretty sure when they see your site they're going to tell you to take down the logo anyway.

And plus, the Protostar seems to be fitted with a counterweight in place of the dot in .com, and YYF doesn't want anything to deal with other legal issues dealing with that. So in the end, you may need to get rid of them and do a whole makeover on the logo. Yeah, a logo's not too much but it's just to save you trouble in the future.

I do not mean to make a big scene out of this, and I know I should have PMed but I'll just leave this here.

Other than that, I wish you the best and I look forward to the official release of your website!

I think I need to stop reading too much forum threads and start yoyoing for once.

Hello!

Thanks for the advice, I didn't think of that. CyberYo.com is just my personal trick tutorial website, it's not the big one I'm building now. I figured on my personal site I could use an image of my favorite yoyo configuration without making anyone upset. Hopefully that's true. =) Although I do see your point, I'll consider changing it.

To reiterate, the site I'm working on is not CyberYo.com. I built that site a while back, and it's already released. The site I'm building now is a totally separate site with a different name (and no yoyos or anything but text in the logo, don't worry)  Smiley

If that's the case, then I'm sure you're good to go! Let us know when your website comes out! And I'm also looking for a cleaner layout as your personal site looked kinda mid 2000s in a sense. I'm not a good web designer and I haven't built a site from scratch in years but I have an eye for great layouts with simple styles :]

I hope the good guys up there won't even mind because it's not the place people will go to when your new site will be up. Cheesy

Anyways, as for elements, it'd be great to have a section that deals with transitions from one element to another. Like the many of the different ways to get to one mount to another smoothly. I'm a noob so I can't contribute much, but since I'm learning my elements and transitions right now, it'd be great to include those in your tutorials.

More power to you! Keep working on it!
