Nice story trevlor! I teach seventh grade in my school and I am somewhat responsible for the yo-yo epidemic at my school too. Our playground is full of kids throwing yo-yos at recess. Unfortunately, some of those kids (the ones in the lower grades) are taking the term throwing a little too literally. We just had an announcement over the PA system warning the students that the misuse of the yo-yos on the playground could result in their confiscation. Needless to say, I have the grade 7 yo-yo club members out there watching out for the little kids and making sure they "throw" the yo-yos properly. It's great to see some of these kids help each other learn tricks and share with each other the new skills they have learned. The confidence, leadership, listening, and patience displayed by these students is awesome. (Now if I could only get one of the manufacturers to help us out with prizes for our upcoming yo-yo competition that I am holding for our school Yo-Yo Club that would be great!) tR.

Okay, so I think I've defused the situation. It appears as though some of the teachers were concerned for the safety of the other kids in the yard. Some of the yo-yoers are not always aware that they are playing in a "high-traffic" area where some of the younger students are running and playing. I think these teachers are also not familiar with the style of play that modern yo-yoing has become and it "appears" that the yo-yoers are not really in control. In any case, we have now designated a large yo-yo area for students to throw in. I also had a meeting with the yo-yoing population in our school about the rules of "safe yo-yoing". Everything is a-okay now (I hope). It also helps when the principal is cool about the kids and their toys (as well as the teacher and his yo-yos). I wonder how many other people in the forum are also in education? tR.
