YOYO EPIDEMIC!
« on: February 02, 2012, 12:09:55 AM »

lol...ok so i am a 4th grade teacher. I have gotten a LOT of kids into throwing at my school. It is really cool when i see them with new yos they get online and stuff. But what is really funny is that they are trying to throw ALL THE time and the other teachers are blaming me for them throwing in the bathroom and stuff. lol
The other day, 5th grade went on a field trip and one of the kid's yos fell out of his pocket during an orchestra performance at a prominent music venue! of course i got blamed haha!
its all in good fun, but i think it is funny that i have caused "problems" in my school....oh and kids get there yoyos taken up ALL the time at my school

im a little pround honestly =P

Just out of curiosity, have you ever had a yoyo taken away from a kid and thought "Oh man, I've got to try this before I give it back"

I was about to say something witty about refusing to give up your yoyo, but then I went back and remembered you're talking about 5th graders. Not much defiance at that age usually.

Anyway, in my opinion the school should be encouraging such a hobby. It's a good way to sharpen your mind, and have a lot of fun at the same time. Maybe not all the time, like in class, but they shouldn't be taking them away.

And usually, (from what I've seen as a student.), there are 2 types of teachers. Rule followers, and cool ones. You learn the same from both types, but one is fun, and one ain't. You sound like a cool teacher Trevor.

As a middle school teacher who throws, I have turned more than my fair share of students onto the hobby and, yes, every time a student is injured or gets in trouble with a yo-yo (even if I haven't ever taught them) I catch flak.

It does suck, to be honest.  It's hard enough to be a nearly 30 year-old fella who yo-yos, but when kids are - you know - KIDS, I get blamed.  Anyway, who cares.  Some of my best yo-yoers are students who have serious behavior and schoolwork concerns, so hopefully being really good at SOMETHING will help them out.

Also, thanks for your service.  It's tough as Hell to be a teacher, man.

Cheers,
Doc

This happened to me when I taught yo-yo at an elementary school, working with 3rd-5th graders. I count it as the main reason that we had to discontinue the yo-yo club after just one year. Still, I'm glad that I had the honor of being the spark that lit those kids' fires.

My physics teacher got me hooked. Now thanks to him I'm yoyo guy. I hope it helps me though, I've had to yoyo in nearly every class but I'm still not used to doing it for the WHOLE class. Now if only I could get as many CLYWs as him....Maybe even a Mr. Curmudgeon Canvas...

lol, the kids who get the better yos are usually smarter about only bringing them out in yoyo club or at recess; the others mostly got their yos from me so i know what they are haha...but i have gotten to try new stuff thanks to my kids =)

I just left a yoyo on my desk and waited until one of the kids asked about it. Pretty funny watching their reactions when I did a couple string tricks. I teach 6th -- this year there are a bunch of kids really into it, but so far I haven't gotten too much flak over yoyos causing problems. So far.
