The Berserker by c3yoyodesign | YoYoSkills.com Review
« on: January 31, 2012, 09:46:27 PM »

“Why does everyone like Wolverine?” my 11 year old self would ask the circle of comic geeks. I grew up around video game developers and comic book artists. This was at the birth of the PC Gamer era when games like King Quest and Monkey Island were being released. I lived in Oakhurst California, and helped out (got in the way) with game testing for Sierra On Line while my dad worked on music and production. This was also the time in my life when I started getting into comics. All the comic geeks would gather and talk about what was happening in various X-Books or argue over Vertigo storylines. I was pretty new to the whole scene and mainly followed cap’ed heroes like Superman and Prime. The Anti-hero movement was completely foreign to me, so when I piped up and squeaked “Why does everyone like Wolverine?” in this hallowed ground of nerdom, the response I got was a bit overwhelming. At least four discussions started about how tough Wolverine was, how he was un-killable, how he never held back, ect ect. This quickly dissolved into augments over if Wolvie could beat (insert character here). One of the chief nerds handed me an “all things Wolverine” trade paperback for me to read. I absorbed it. I read his back story, strengths and inner struggle. I learned about his unbreakable adamantium skeleton and his berserker rage. I was hooked. For most of my teen age years, I followed Wolverine on almost every book he appeared. Knowing this about myself, I am not surprised Wolverine was the first thing that came to mind when I heard about c3yoyodesigns new yo-yo would be called the Berserker.

Chris would you reccomend a Berserker over a Chief? Just a random question because they have similar specs besides weight.

I'd be interested to know a comparison between the Berserker and the Gleipnir. The specs (including weight) are nearly identical, so I'd like to know how the different weight distributions between the two make the play differ from one to the other.

The Berserker looks pretty darn good, but I must say I miss C3's older, cleaner aesthetics.

Whats up with that splash, man?

Another vote for the Berserker here. I love this yoyo, splash included. I also have a Chief and prefer the Berserker. I've been contemplating a Gleipnir for a while now, but the whole vibe after opening issue has scared me away from YYR for the time being.

Wow I never heard someone call horizontal "vertax" outside of diabolo.

I really wish people did not bash the Berserker when it first came out. Seems like a great yo.

Sunny, are you saying that YYR fixed the problem they had with previous models where opening it up would introduce vibe? Yoyorewind has a disclaimer up for all YYR yoyos so I assumed that this issue was with all models. I open up my yoyos frequently to clean bearings, change strings, etc so this is why I'm concerned.

While the disclaimer was for ALL YYR Yo-Yo's, they were specifically for the newer Blinks and E=MC^2. The older Yo-Yo's have no problem

I've read at least one review of vibe being introduced after opening a Sleipnir. Unfortunately there aren't very many reviews around of YYR, so it is hard to gauge how common this may or may not be. Disclaimers such as the one I mentioned, coupled with it happening to somebody in a review out of so few doesn't inspire confidence.

The original runs of YYR Yo-Yo's did have some vibe. Original stargazer, stargazer v2, stardust, stardust v2, some sleipners, messiahs, and the newer blink and e=mc^2.

The clash 2011, Overdrive, clashcube, sleipner 2011, Messiah 2009-2011, Gleipner, stardust 2, dreadnought, dreadnought G, were all smooth. I know fro mpersonal play on these yoyos. the vibey ones are all hearsay, except for stargazer v2

In 'responsible' hands yyr don't have any issues. Yoyos are made to disgustingly high tolerances. If respect is not shown to that fact and players 'expect'  yoyos that push the limits also to be safe to user abuse  disappointment is guaranteed.

Regardless of brand all tolerances wear with use. No used yoyo plays the same throughout its life. Bearings wear, metal warps, bearing seats get tweaked. It happens.  If yyr  are close to 'the edge' design wise it might happen a little easier, but I don't think they are too worried about scaring off customers who don't already understand these basic principles experienced elite players know.

Ps i prefer the berserker, but i could easily apply the yyr warning to any buyers of it too.

Good to know! Thanks for sharing knowledge and experiences, Swat and Ben.

I often wonder just how much of this obsession with vibe is simply OCD or dirty bearings as I've never really experienced any vibe in the 30+ metals I've had, unless I stopped and really looked for a hint of it. Even with the abuse that I've put a couple of yoyos through, they've all remained smooth. Some smoother than others of course, but I still wonder if what I've experienced is what these people are talking about. I'm now determined to not let it affect my decisions. In fact, the only time I ever even look for vibe is right before I sell a yoyo because I'm worried that I'll misrepresent the yoyo I'm about to sell. I never would have looked for it in the first place, except that it seems to be discussed a lot.
