I would get a YoYoJam Legacy 2. It comes with 2 different bearings, one for responsive play and one for unresponsive play, so you can do beginner tricks as well as the more advanced ones. Spins well, has good stability, as well as a good response system, and also looks nice (imo). For $25 you can't go wrong. Remember to pick up a whole bunch of strings, as well as a couple extra response pads.

Have fun. Don't worry about dings. Buy lots of string. Go to club meetings. Watch videos of yoyoing 1/5 of the time you spend yoyoing. Don't care about bearing types or specs. Try lots of yoyos but buy few. Become a fanboy of the hobby, not of a company. Have fun. Walk the dog, anywhere. Learn a little bit of every style. Never call it a "spobby". Go to any contest you can. Learn all the tricks on the Nationals Trick Ladder. Go find a National Master and say thanks, then ask to see their coolest trick. Carry a yoyo everywhere. Have fun!

buy a speed maker its all catch zone, decent spins, adjustable gap, most dope yoyo for 15 dollars ever buy more string than u think u will need get lighter fluid to clean ur yyj bearing (look up a tutorial on this), get a million toothpicks to get out your double loopage which is 100% inevitable, once u have ur supplies get on youtube which is your new best friend for life and learn to throw, and um buy a helmet....
sorry for my grammar/spelling i promise ill work on it someday

what you should know? dont give up. i still remember when i first learned "and whut", took me about 4 days to master, i didnt play that much each day but yeah took me a while also try really hard to make your throws as straight as possible, every single time. i didnt when i first started and i have to try to learn that now, when im doing a bunch of tricks that cant afford to have the tilt.

enjoy yourself, have fun. don't practice because you want to be the best, practice because it's fun
do/buy/practice whatever you fancy, don't make it extra hard on yourself because people told you so
film yourself if you can, you'll improve by watching you playing
meet people, go to contests or meeting, this is the true heart of the community, forums are merely an ersatz, the community is great when you meet the people, forums are... well... forums, with all the internet induced negativity and whatnot. but once you get to meet the people, you'll see beyond that.
