People (non-yoyoers) are surprised about yoyos!
« on: January 17, 2012, 09:44:12 AM »

Are you living in areas where YoYos are not recognized as how they are?

What I mean is, people in my areas think that yoyos are the ones that goes down and up - only. Of course there are many yoyoers and competition that goes on and knows about yoyos but somehow, yoyos are not exposed to the general public.

My friends are surprised with the sleeper trick. I'm dead serious. When I said it can keep rotating for 3 min they have this "omg" look on their faces. Even a higher class physics students could not believe that a ball-bearing and weight precision can handle the sleep time like that just with single throw. (in theory he knows that it should move forever without friction but just never thought in reality, with friction of the balls, it can keep rotating that much)

with the 'omg' look on the face just at the sleep time, when I do tricks... the rest is history =D

So are you guys still in areas or countries that doesn't know about 'modern' yoyos?

The other day I was at my friends house and I started to show him some stuff....I ended up talking to the whole family for 1/2 an hour about modern yo-yoing.  I had to give a how to speech for a speech club a few weeks ago, and afterwards parents kept coming up to me saying how they had never heard of bearing in yo-yos, or unresponsive.

Are any of these reactions supposed to be surprising? I mean, our kind of yoyoing is drastically different from theirs. I wouldn't expect anyone who is anyone to understand or acknowledge the existence of our yoyoing.

I'm not surprised that people don't know a thing about unresponsive yoyo[ing]. I just have to assume that they don't know anything unless they tell me that they know how to yoyo [or at least bind]. In the end of the day, the average person will think yoyo = Duncan/Yomega and that's just the way it is.

I think I need to stop reading too much forum threads and start yoyoing for once.

one word here: media

most people are not educated about the sport, and it's our job to educate them by using the medias, I love it when I see professional promotional or music videos with yoyo in it, this is what we need to educate the crowds

it's our job to educate them

I don't understand the importance behind educating someone about our hobby just up and out of the blue. It's comparable to shoving something in your face.

We yoyo. Okay.

well, we do get stuff shoved in our face all day long without even noticing anymore, why do you think I don't watch TV anymore for more than 10 years now?

I'll never go to random people and "educate them about yoyos", but if I get asked to walk the dog, it also means the person shows some interest, so I use it in order to educate that person about yoyoing

same goes with music videos, they will be watched by people not aware of modern yoyoing, therefore they will see what it is about and maybe get into it or tell their friends.

I'm with you in the whole "not watching TV" thing. Really beneficial methinks.

Your response is a much improved way of saying what I know you meant. The "It's our duty to do this and that" just threw me off a bit and came off a bit... I dunno, preachy?

But I gotcha, it'd be nice to let someone know our side of yoyo if they find themselves with a player, and media coverage would be neat.

You can't expect people to know anything about yoyos when most people don't even know that much about sports, music, etc that are talked about everyday.

no worries, just keep in mind, english is NOT my natural/native language, so some things I write can come out wrong or misleading. I'm probably doing alright with english but there will always be some differences, cultural or whatever else.

when I think about what can be done to educate people about the sport, I watch what Zuffa is doing with the UFC brand and mixed martial arts, back in the 90s Mixed martial arts were considered as human cockfighting and even on pay per view, they weren't allowed (where porn was, they wasn't allowed). Now they're on fox and the UFC is a billion dollars company, fighters are superstars, MMA gyms are opening everywhere etc... If they did it with something that most people didn't even want to hear about, we sure can do it with yoyoing. But for that we need (and we have, actually) a big company that can afford to lose money in sponsoring events, players, and make it so that yoyoing is more shown in the media.

we're getting there. the sport angle is definitely the right angle to do that (even tho, I am more of an "artistic player" myself)
