I've actually though about this a lot myself, it seems most of the better yoyoers have long fingers.

It's funny because I don't know how it feels to have longer or shorter finger, so I can't compare. too bad isn't it...

I have rather long fingers and my friend has short fingers, we both have different styles I do more slacks and whips. He does more speedy and technical tricks. I guess that having long fingers can help with the precision of whips and you can get more wraps around them . For example I can do triple or nothing a lot easier than my friend.

It might even be a good thing. If you think of your finger as a lever, longer fingers would equate to more leverage and thusly more stress on your hands/joints when you throw. When I am looping if the knot is near the end of my finger (near the nail) my hand becomes tired and sore much quicker than when the string is close to my hand.
(this just occurred to me, so there may be an overwhelming hole in my reasoning.)

it might first seem like it does, but I do think it doesn't just watch Takeshi Matsuura, he's 14, 4 times world champion and plays for 7 years, how big could his hand be? having long fingers might or might not give someone an edge at the beginning, but once you got your muscle memory straight, there'll be no difference.

I've often thought this was true. We'll never really know unless someone does a study comparing finger lengths of say higher ranking contest winners to those who don't place as high. It's not like having longer fingers would automatically make you a better player, but it seems like it would provide an advantage.
Consider 2 measurably similar long distance runners. Similar muscle mass, similar training, similar drive to succeed....one of them will be better than the other because of naturally having more "fast twitch" muscle fiber in his leg muscles. In fact, I'm curious if having more fast twitch muscle finders in your fingers might be more of an advantage vs finger length.
Genetics matter no matter how much we wish otherwise. Drive to succeed probably matters more though. All the generic advantage in the world doesn't matter if you don't have the drive to train and take advantage of those genetics.

I don't know how it would affect the play or the effort on the joints, but with longer fingers, you definitely put more effort on your muscles, joints and tendons, now is it significant or not, I don't know.

i agree w/ vega'...lookin' at it from a physics angle (i.e. eliminatin' any sense of skill or ability) - i think longer appendages would open up chopsticked string lengths more. in my view, any trick can be adapted to my physical build. there are so many ways to approach and exit a trick. i work w/ what i have - and that's 'nough to keep yo yoin' fun and fresh for me mgodinez cloudy...

For me though, if i have too much string wrapped around my finger, i have a hard time maneuvering the yoyo to the correct string. (it would be too clumped together because of my nubby fingers lol)
but at the end of the day, yoyoing is just for fun
