Hi, i'm new to the site! Just wondering, if you were just starting to get into more advanced play and you were looking to buy your first metal yoyo today, regardless of price which one would you choose? Some of the ones i'm considering are: Sleipnir Sakura Lio Trident Avalanche Superstar Do you think i am on the right track with one of these? Or would you recommend something else? Thanks to all in advance

Honestly, you do not need any of those. At this point they are not worth the money. If you want my advice, buy an AODA follow wind (pm me for site) and a 10ball bearing. put the bearing in the aoda and you can do just about everything. Did I mention that this package is $30 total? And the Aoda is a metal yoyo.

Add One Drop, SPYY and 3yo3 to your list. Get anything from any of them and you can't go wrong.

I was afraid of that, seems everyone has their favorites. I've done lots of reading and it SEEMS that the yoyorecreation throws are generally held in a slightly higher regard. Yet, everyone has their favs, which i appreciate I'm going to wait for a few more days before i pick one, hopefully i will get some more feedback here, thanks for the responses! tbo i though there these forums were a bit busier lol

If money is truly no object, then an expensive YYR might be a good choice.
Then again, you can get top-tier yoyos much cheaper. For example, the Burnside by One Drop. At $85, it'll hold its own next to any other yoyo.
Also, if you can find one and are willing to pay the high price, CLYW Chiefs are all the rave right now.
I have a personal favorite in the undersize category. SPYY Supra. If you might like a smaller yoyo, you can't beat it. No exaggeration, it's the best undersize. You can find them relatively cheap used in the B/S/T forum here.
As for the yoyos you listed, they're all good. You may as well just pick the one that looks best to you, maybe after searching up some individual reviews of each.
Basically, all expensive metal yoyos (and even some cheaper ones!) play amazingly well. If it's current, or at least within the last few years of releases, chances are it's good. You can find reviews on most popular yoyos that will give you hints to their individual characteristics. In the long run, if you pay for a high-quality metal yoyo, that's what you're going to get.
There are a lot of specs that matter. Fullsize, oversize, undersize. Think about the benefits and drawbacks of each for you. Weight is another important factor. Personally, I love lighter yoyos. They may not spin as long, but they are much more comfortable. A couple of the best yoyos I've ever owned, I cast away because they felt like a burden to my hands with their high weights. If you feel like you don't mind sacrificing comfort for spin time, maybe a heavier yoyo is what you're looking for.
Aesthetics are another big consideration for some. Pick one considering how much it appeals to your eye.
As for my recommendation, sincerely: One Drop Burnside. It's got Side Effects built in so it's versatile, and people are saying it's a top-notch, competition-grade yoyo, made in America to high standards. I haven't played it myself, but I have owned many other One Drop yoyos and they make good stuff, and it just keeps getting better. It's full-size at 57mm, and will run you only $85, including a famous 10-ball bearing.
If you prefer a smaller yoyo, get the 50mm SPYY Supra.
I haven't played every high-end metal yoyo out there, but I have played dozens of them, all from well-liked companies, and I can say that you can't go wrong with either of those options. Well, actually, you can't really go wrong at all. Just buy a metal yoyo and enjoy it!

Burnside does not use the side effects system.

Burnside does not use the side effects system. Oh yeah. I knew that, just had a brain fart when I typed that sentence. Nonetheless, I'm sure it kicks butt and my recommendation has to stand. For S.E. yoyos... Code 1, Dietz, Dang, Code 2 (coming soon)... try any of those and you can't go wrong. Thanks.

Through my experience, there were only a couple Aoda and Auldey yoyo's that came even remotely close to the quality of yoyo's from other manufacturers. No offense, but judging by you only having a G5, you can't really put much critique in comparison to other yoyo's that he's asking about. You may be asking why, but there are even other Chinese-made yoyo's that use higher grade aluminum and have a lot higher QC that just makes it feel better, physically and mentally. Think of Dream Yo, God Tricks, C3yoyo, YoYo Recreation, Turning Point, YoYoFactory, etc. Although price is an important factor, a lot of the times, it does show. I used to have a lot of Aoda and Auldey, but they just didn't feel their worth.

Money isn't an issue? Buy all of them!
Honestly, if you go with any of the major companies you're gonna get a great yoyo. There are a few stinkers here and there, but for the most part they're all really good. My first metal was a H-Spin Icon. Wouldn't suggest it. I was trying to stay in a budget. All it did was make me want to buy a more expensive one. My opinion is if you're gonna do it you might as well do it right the first time. Just think about what you like. Do you like small, medium, or large? Floaty or heavier, or somewhere in between? Pick something that looks appealing to you. I own a lot of yoyos so I could tell you what the ones I have are like. A lot of it is based on preference.
Here's the deal though... It's like getting into any other kind of hobby. Should I put in a Flow Master exhaust in my car or go with someone else? Is a bottle of Penfolds La Grange really worth $250? How does a cigar from Nicaragua taste different from one from Cuba? Should I go with a blended or single malt Scotch Whisky? Is the 12 year fine or should I spring for the 18 year? Why do people make such a big deal about coffee from Seattle? I could go on but you get the point.
Just pick something you think is appealing. Play with it for 3 months. THEN do some research on some of the other stuff that interests you. Do the reviews sound like you'd like the one your reading about based on your experience with the one you have now? Buy it and see. How does your opinion differ from the review you read? They say "floaty" but it may feel heavy to you. You'll find that the more stuff you try out the more you start to develop a taste. I wouldn't worry too much about details when picking the first one. Really the 3 biggest factors to consider are Diameter, Width, and Weight. It's all subjective anyways. I have yoyos that play lighter than lighter yoyos. I have light yoyos that feel like heavy beasts. What's on paper and what you feel can be polar opposites.
Want my personal opinion? I love the Sasquatch. It's bigger, heavy, not too floaty but doesn't thunk on the end of the string. A lot of people like the Avalanche over the Sasquatch. It's the same size and shape but feels a lot lighter and plays floatier. That's just my 2 cents.

I personally love my DV888, it has a super smooth finish that culminates in amazing grinds; it may be slightly undersized but it fits well in your hand and has an amazing weight to it; the response system is a little tight with new string, causing some response at first (mostly with whips and such); with a price point of $45 it is almost a no brainier. (IMO)
