Making yoyos are such a waste, isn't it?
« on: December 30, 2011, 09:33:22 PM »

I'm talking about the machining process of aluminum cylinders. I bet i think 70% of them just disappear to dust and remaining 30% are part of the yoyo. (Just assuming).

I was thinking, could yoyo companies some how reunite. Take those broken/sandy/leftover aluminum and melt them to liquid form, dry em up to solid aluminum and make yoyos again?. Sure the quality is lower but that's where low priced yoyos should be made. but then again, the processing of melting and refining leftover metal might be costly? I don't know.

Infact I know nothing, i'm just laying out hypothesis for promoting environmental friendly awareness.

If i'm not mistaken, machine shops scrap or recycle their aluminum scraps.
It would cost them a lot of money to get the equipment to melt it down themselves.

Per weight, 83% of the aluminum we buy leaves the shop as chips and 17% leaves as finished yoyos.  We sell the chips to a recycling company that compresses them and ships them to a smelter to be re-refined and turned back into ingot and eventually bar stock.  Aluminum costs us about $2.50 per pound and when we sell it as chips to the recycling company they pay us about 35 cents per pound.  More than 90% of all the aluminum ever mined in the world is still in use today.  fyi.

I don't even have a word for how much sense that doesn't make.
