Newb with fast 201 in the mail
« on: December 29, 2011, 11:17:55 PM »

Hey everyone, my name's Trent,

I had a fast 201 years ago as a kid and haven't been able to find another one since, so I ordered one online. I bought another yoyo the other day and it's not that great but I can still do most of the tricks I used to be able to. I have a few questions...

Are there any mods that I can do to make the fast better, I know people say grind down the starburst and stuff so I might look into that.

What is "looping"? I read a thread where someone said the fast 201 can't loop. Is looping doing the trick "around the world" it's probably not called that anymore, but I used to do it with my fast and could get 12 full loops before bringing it back.

I can do a few beginner tricks like

The one where the yoyo is swinging through a triangle
The elevator (wrap the string back into the yoyo and it returns to your hands and then you pull your string hand and it starts spinning again)
I can pretty much throw it in any direction and get it to come back and some other stuff. Sorry I don't know what it's all called...

I'm looking forward to getting my fast and learning again, is there a good priced yoyo that I can move to after the fast to continue to improve, and are there many online trick tutorials that I could have a look at?

Cheers,

Trent

Also, I am just reading about the YoYoFactory JK and the ebay add says

"Please note that this yoyo is not for beginners and requires a bind to return." What is a bind?

Also, why to some people on this forum have  something to grip on the end of their string instead of a loop for the finger?

Cheers!

The fast 201 is pretty limiting for a beginner honestly. There are several yoyos in the same price range that would last you from the beginner to advanced stages without hitch. I'd recommend one of the following:

http://www.yoyonation.com/product.php?productid=16148&cat=248&page=1
http://www.yoyonation.com/product.php?productid=16430&cat=285&page=3
http://www.yoyonation.com/product.php?productid=17142&cat=275&page=2 (sold out at the moment)

Also, these yoyo's aren't particularly suitable for looping because they are butterfly shaped. Looping is possible, but if you are looking for a looping yoyo specifically I'd recommend this:

There're plenty of tutorial videos on YouTube. The most popular ones for beginners are by Andre Boulay. His vids are a great place to start.

Thanks, I'll have a look.

Does anyone know the name of the trick I'm about to describe? I thought it was the elevator but according to youtube I'm wrong...

I throw a sleeper, then with my non throwing index finger I put it on the inside of the string then wrap my throwing index finger under the yoyo, so the yoyo is kind of sitting inside the point of a triange, then I give it a pull and it comes up into both of my hands, still. Then I throw my throwing hand toward the ground and the yoyo starts to spin again and I can get it back.

Anyone know this???

Welcome to the Nation, kawasakirider! Are you Australian by chance?
That aside, the Velocity is a great beginner's yoyo to grow up to. :]
Have fun yoyoing and have a great year!

I think I need to stop reading too much forum threads and start yoyoing for once.

Thanks mate, keen to get it and have a play around. I'll keep the fast and try my hand at modding when I know more about the physics of yoyo's.

I am an Aussie, did you know that from my ebay link, or have you seen me on other forums?

I'm guessing by the fact that you were buying a 3AM new years gift while most of the rest of the world was still waiting for the new year Afro

Haha, that might have something to do with it!

Can't wait for my velocity to get here. Do you guys think I should sell the 201 when it gets here or keep it?

First, welcome! You'll like the velocity. It's a nice little throw.

I'd keep the 201. Once people see you yoyoing, you're bound to have someone interested in learning to throw, and you can always give it to another new thrower and help spread the yoyo love.

I was thinking of giving it to my 10 year old nephew, but he is really uncoordinated and would end up hurting someone. I'm just about to let him have a go with the triple switch Smiley

I got the velocity and the other yoyo yesterday, the volocity is sick! Very smooth and long sleep times. The fast 201 that was supposed to come didn't, the company got it mixed up with a spin star. Is the spinstar better than the fast 201? If so I'll keep it, if not I'll ask for a return. Really enjoying the velocity though Cheesy

As I thought. Nope, not because of those two reasons. Nope, Topo. Not even that! :]
It's because you said "heaps." I have a handful of Australian friends and I always hear[err..read] that word from them :]
Pretty neat, though!

Haha, I didn't realise that "heaps" was an uncommon thing to you guys.

Been playing with the velocity, it's a great yoyo!
