trouble with spinouts
« on: December 29, 2011, 11:14:49 PM »

Hi folks,

Relatively new player here. Hoping you can help my learning progress. I received a new yoyo today and unlike my previous two, this one seems rather prone to spinouts. I'm wondering if the yoyo is just exposing a flaw in my throws that the others covered up, or if that's just the way of this yoyo.

Can you folks explain what causes a spinout and what, if anything, I can do to reduce them? Bad throw? Non-center-trac bearing? Poorly balanced yoyo? Maybe the response system is dragging on the string a bit and needs to break in?

I've noticed only that the string does not sit centered in the bearing, ever. And the the yoyo always starts tilted slightly away from the side towards which the string sits on the bearing.

Just looking for any clues or help. Can provide details on my yoyos, just didn't want to start there as I'm betting the cause is more likely me.

Appreciate the help.

at this point, it's all technique, and that usually comes with time.

learn tilt correction. By nudging the yoyo with the string, you can tilt it forward and backward. over time, you'll probably end up doing this subconsciously. If you throw a breakaway, tilt correction should be driven by the left hand.

What yo-yos are you using?

I'd imagine though that it's just a practice thing. I think people watch videos and expect their yo-yos to perform like the ones they see. It takes lots of practice.

Did I mention practice? Smiley

If you throw a breakaway, tilt correction should be driven by the left hand.

I use either hand (and occasional both at the same time), just in opposite directions. Don't see why there's one specific hand to use but if I'm missing something I'm curious to know what.

Cool, helpful feedback.

Turns out I had done some tilt correction, but hadn't been formally introduced to it. Went and studied this. My tricks are still a tad slow, so the yoyo spends more time sitting in a mount than most folks I think. Probably exacerbating the problem.

I did find that the bearing in the above mentioned yoyo was a little slow and sloppy. So I swapped it and am getting smoother / quieter spins. Still have to practice, as I think was mentioned above.  Afro

For the curious, my throws are:
1. YYJ Dark Magic II
2. OneDrop Code 1 (put a konkave bearing in this one; have played with this one the most)
3. CLYW Canvas (this is the one where I noticed my weakness; also, the one I swapped in the spare OneDrop flat bearing that I replaced above)

Cheers.
