Trying to find my perfect yoyo.
« on: December 25, 2011, 04:26:33 PM »

I suppose my yoyo history will help you all get an idea of what i like in my yoyos. I started with a Duncan mosquito, which at the time i thought was too small and light to be practical (I've since found that hubstacked sili recessed ones are extremely fun). I got a PGM v1 which i loved, and learned all my basics on that. About half a year after that I decided i wanted to try metal, so I got an 888 Classic. Loved it, still do, but I knew then that undersized was more fun for me.

Later, I picked up a raw ministar on the BST. It's probably my favorite throw. It plays smooth, stable, and it fits in with my undersized throw fascination. I find myself wishing it were slightly less floaty at times and a bit heavier, more solid feeling. I picked up a velocity for a friend to learn with and got a popstar for myself as a novelty. Well the popstar hits a lot of points. The diameter is nice,  its got almost the perfect weight, and has a nice solid feel. but I wish it were slightly wider, a bit more rim weight, and had a response similar to my general yo.

I know I have strange preferences and that small yoyos have technical limitations. I guess I'm asking if someone knows of something thats somewhere between a ministar and a popstar. If no such thing exists, I suppose my next step will be to look into getting one commissioned.

That does look interesting. At first glance the width was a bit scary.  I guess im envisioning something like a mini project with really beefy rims.

An Ilyy St. Eel is the best undersize on the market and has the response you are looking for.  It would perform 10x better than a Popstar. Good luck!

Anybody played a St. Eel and a ministar?  I don't have a lot of varied experience with yoyos, but to me the ministar feels less floaty than my 888. On things like hooks and brent stoles, it seems to gain a bit of float to the point where you don't really feel it land it just slips into place. With the St. Eel being even lighter, it seems as if it would seem to zip around a bit.

I'll probably pick one up either way since I was torn between both of them and jumped at the deal on the mini. Also been looking at the Micro Mo a bit.

:)The clashcube isn't actually very wide! Because it's so small the width seems wide, but is actually decent. The dia:width ratio is just disproportionate making the yoyo play very uniquely. The new YYR 6 is like this as well. Both look like very interesting throws but the 6 intrigues me.

On the topic of wide yoyos: Both the Monster and Superwide are overlooked in my opinion. Because they are so wide and slant in  to the gap, they both feel like an undersized yoyo in hand, but give the benefits of a full size yoyo in stability. I really like the Monster, I think you might like it if you gave it a try.

Hope it helps!

I love the BBYY Wedgie.  Not to be too self promoting, but I've got one for sale.  Thyre really really great, as long as you don't hate small bearings.
