binding a yoyo
« on: December 09, 2011, 07:57:32 PM »

I have read lots and seen many videos on youtube but I still can't get it we just got an avalanche yoyo actually it is my sons and I took it for a test drive his older one was very responsive and being an old fart I wanted to get into something he is interested in which so happens to be yoyoing. Anyways very long story short I would like to learn how to bind my son's yoyo he is learning as well but can do it better than me and it has turned into the house joke that I can't bind so I want to learn it and show him that the old man still has some tricks lol. I have been reading and watching videos for the past 3 weeks and trying everything that I read or saw sometimes I can get the basic bind when you throw a sleeper put the string over your non throw hand wrap the throw hand in front of yoyo release the loop and tug with the throw hand but when I do this it only sometimes catches and when it does my throw hand is so far above my head nothing like the videos so I guess I am doing something really wrong. The other that worked a bit was the middle of the plastic whip after you loop the string around the yoyo I release with throw hand index finer putting the loop into the gap and it sometimes binds and most of the time gets a knot....The yoyo is an avalanche out of the box with original string and I think the bearing is dry (my son is afraid to put in lube because then he thinks it will make the yoyo responsive to do things like plastic whip that type of string throwing where you have to lift up on the yoyo and have it not catch....) Any help would be much obliged best regards Sean.

I had troubles on my first YYJam and then again with my first wider gapped yoyo.  More string into the gap helps, but can cause snaggs if you go too far.  The original thing that helped me start connecting with what is needed was to get the yoyo moving up toward the throw hand just before the string is released.  That way it already has momentum in the direction it needs to go and the bind has less work to do.

I found the tutorial on the peterfish yoyo site the most helpful.

This is not supposed to be a tutorial... But the first ~25 are pretty easy.
