OD ten ball bearings.
« on: November 22, 2011, 10:12:35 AM »

I decided to finally try these.  i have them in four of my throws.  now i was under the impression that these are supposed to be super smooth and quiet.  so far only one has stayed that way.  the other three fairly quickly got pretty noisy and seem to be suffering spin time issues.  i have been out of aceton so im on my way to the hardware store now, but is this normal?  i mean this is only affter several hours of play.  do they just need to be cleaned all the time?

The three I've had have always been good for me. Smooth and more quiet than regular bearings. If they ever get noisy, I just drop a pin sized drop of lube and the noise is gone.
Not sure what you do to you bearing... Do you run them dry?
The only bearings that have crapped out on me are regular yyj steel bearings.

I have 4 of them. One in each of my main yoyo's (Superstar, Superstar, Avalanche, Severe 09). All of them have stayed quiet and smooth without any sort of cleaning or lubrication.

Two of them are deshielded, two are not.

Maybe it's breaking in? Whendever a bearing is breaking in it turns loud and slightly responsive

I have more than a dozen OD 10 ball bearings and none of them have given me any trouble at all.

I think your guy's impression that these are anything but normal bearing is what is leading you astray.  They are normal bearings just like any other bearing.  Some will need work some won't.  There are no perfect bearings and never will be.
I have bearing that came in fhz’s that I have never lubed even once even after years of play, I have 10 balls I needed to lube in a day.  That’s life.

I have 1 in almost every yoyo i own... Not one is bad.. or has gone bad...

Learn bearing maintenance. <--some skip this.
Most new bearings need to be broken in...
My ten ball procedure.
1. They get loud, gritty.. responsive..
2. play with em more till the responsive goes away..
3. clean
4. Lube
5. Break in the lube
6. Should be quiet and unresponsive.

Yeah, I take very good care of my bearings and I still had 2/5 go bad. Hopefully my luck improves.

i meant by noisy and responsive is its almost completely locked up and cleaning in acetone didnt work.  i played the bearing for 5 hrs...  i have just never had a bearing do that After that little play time.  i also always maintain my bearings but have never had to clean them this early on.  also i dont understand what you mean about your brek in method. I have never had a bearing go from unresponsive to responsive during break in unless i have for whatever reason decided to put extra lube on it.

Lucky. My 2 that died did so in spectacular fashion. Like a loud scream and a sudden stop. One was a brand brand new one I had in my old caferacer. The 'budget' bearing outlived it. Cleaning, compressed air, and more cleaning couldn't save them. Oh well.

Meh. I'm not really complaining too much. 10 balls play spectacular for the most part.

I currently have OD 4 10 balls in use. They all play smooth and reliable.

I do find they get quite loud after a while. It happens quite suddenly, not in increments. A bit of lube quietens them down again.

I had the same experience as you did T4T3Z0R. I haven't yet had the chance to try shields modding them but I heard it pays off rather well to get them more consistent with their smoothness and quietness. It's worked for every other bearing I've tried it on, so who knows.
