Anti-Yo - YWET
« on: November 21, 2011, 08:36:56 PM »

Anti-Yo is back, and this time it’s for reals.

Introduction

I quit two years ago and rumors were going about this yoyo. I come back and rumors are still going on! HypeHypeHype! Guess I came back at a good time.. a time when the YWET just got released. When I came back, I took a look at all the new yoyos and their specs to see if anything’s changed. What I noticed was that everything seems to incorporate a ‘h-shape’. I can understand why they did this, to improve spin time. I never cared for the ‘h-shape’ much because I never liked how it felt in my hands. I’ve always loved the classic fat butterfly shape and one of my favorite yoyos is the Oxy 4 because of it. The first Anti-Yo I tried was the Bapezilla and I loved it due to the shape, ‘slip-matte’ finish and color. The only problem it had was the huge vibe. I don’t mind vibe much, but the Bape’s was just too much. When I heard the YWET was actually going to be in production, I was very happy! Even more happy that they kept the classic shape.. and the reasoning can be found in the name of the yoyo which I left below. Anyways, enough of an introduction, the review you guys have been waiting for is up next!

If you’re wondering what YWET means, this came directly from Anti-Yo’s twitter :
‘YWET stands for Yoyos Will Eat Themselves. The idea is that there are no new ideas in the world of yoyoing, progression moves slow.‘

Specifications
  • Diameter: 57mm
  • Width: 47mm
  • Weight: 67mm
  • Bearing: Crucial bearing [C Sized]
  • Stock Response System: Quad-Fist Response

Construction

You either love it, or hate it. I for one love the YWET. It’s a classic fat butterfly shape. A well-known yoyo (maybe not nowadays) that I can compare this great shape to is the Oxy4, one of my most favorite yoyos. Only difference is the YWET’s diameter is quite large at 57mm. A lot larger is you’re used to playing undersized yoyos. One way to describe the feeling of having it in my hands is that it’s just ‘right’. I used to think that the Oxy4 felt good in my hands, but this thing just feels even better! Guess sometimes bigger is better.
The YWET has no hard/sharp corners. The edges are rounded off for maximum comfort.

Side Effects - This is actually the first yoyo I have with Side Effects (I do have a Dietz coming soon though). The special side effects provided with the YWET are flat. One note I have to make is that I wish instead of laser engraving the yoyo with the Anti-Yo heart, they did it on the side effects.
People have been complaining about the ‘outdated’ shape of the YWET. I cannot understand why people say this is an outdated shape while they can pull a 180° and not say that the Canvas has a basic shape. Maybe because it’s an Anti-Yo yoyo and people just want to complain due to the long wait, maybe it’s something else.

Weight

At 67grams, the YWET isn’t a lightweight, but it sure isn’t a heavyweight as well. It doesn’t feel chunky at all. It’s actually very floaty but by no means is it a fast yoyo. Not as fast as say my 07 888, but it can play quite fast if you want it to, it won’t be fighting you if you want to change its direction.

The Finish
On the Anti-Yo site, it states that the finish is a SlipMatte ‘Ni’. The YWET doesn’t have the same finish as old Anti-Yo finishes. I guess the ‘Ni’ stands for something we’ll never know. From what Anti-Yo has said, the yoyo isn’t blasted, but tumbled whatever that means. All I know is that it looks awesome. It has this metallic sheen to it which is similar to galvanized steel which is due to the ‘tumble’ I’m guessing. I had a hard time taking a picture of the finish; I hope you guys can see it.

’A$SP’ Orange Side – It’s flawless. Has the ‘galvanized steel’ look. It’s not as bright as I’d like it to be, but still very awesome. It’s also the side that has the Anti-Yo heart!

Biker Blue – It does have two flaws that Anti-Yo has said due to the hooks that held the yoyo when anodizing. There are also little specks all around the inside (But not the ouside) that give it a unique look. I remember Kiya said the blue side was to represent Dry Jeans and how they age. On the outside, there is also the ‘YWET’ logo. On the inside of the ‘W’, I thought there was a laser engraving flaw, but on close inspection it seems that the mark is actually a ® symbol.

Response and Bearing

This is the section I think everyone’s been waiting on. The ‘Quad-fist’ response system. Why do you ask did Anti-Yo include o-rings, an outdated response system over something like silicone? I remember reading that it’s because Kiya (One of Anti-Yo’s founders) liked it. If he likes it, there must be others around the world that feel the same. I’m not one of those people however. The instant I ripped it out of the box, I gave it one throw and ripped out the o-rings, replacing them with i-Pads (Ryosuke Iwasawa made these Pink pads for Anti-Yo years ago, I believe they’re called Ir-Pads now?). Nice tight binds as silicone always gives. I think what Anti-Yo should’ve done was to include some sort of silicone sticker along with the o-rings and marketed it as a yoyo with options, but I’m not with Anti-Yo..
Another thing about the ‘Quad-Fist’ response is the extra pair of o-rings. I took away the o-ring right away as I wanted ‘schmoove rings’ instead. A few hours later, I decided to try out the o-rings. It may be my imagination, but I found it made the YWET more sluggish and less floaty. I also noticed that my binds weren’t as tight anymore. Maybe someday I’ll find the time to apply silicone to all 4 rings, but for now I’ll be using them as schmoove rings. That’s another reason why I think Anti-Yo should’ve marketed the yoyo as something with options.
Note : I read somewhere that Kiya heard a Japanese player actually added metal weight rings to outer o-ring area to increase the weight. Maybe someone can try that!

The bearing is from Crucial. It looks to me like a KonKave that has a groove to make sure the string stays there. I don’t like KonKaves on certain yoyos as I find they snag a lot. With the YWET however, it was like the bearing was made for it! No snags whatsoever, plus if you’re going to be using o-rings, the string will never touch them. Another thing to note is that the bearing came cleaned and dry. Great news for me as I like to play my bearings with only one tiny drop of lube (Which I did add).

Playability

This yoyo is a very fun yoyo to play. Classic shape is a match made in heaven for my hands. Comfortable to catch every single time ! Spin times won’t blow you away, but they’re also more than enough for long combos. Chopsticks are a no-go for me as I have average sized hands. Maybe someone with larger hands can do chopsticks, but smaller hands are screwed. Suicides aren’t hard at all. This could be in part due to the schmoove rings.
Arm grinds are a breeze with the YWET.
Finger grinds aren’t as easy due to the large size, but still quite easy.
IRG’s I can’t comment on too much since I barely do them, but I can do a 360° IRG with no problem.
Palm grinds are great due to the finish.

Extras

I love extras that come with yoyos. It makes me feel that that the company actually cares about the consumers!

Baggy – A denim holster/bag thing that Anti-Yo and Holy Stitch made. It’s made from high quality Japanese denim I believe; that’s the good stuff people! The hardware are copper with a sort of splash on them. It also includes a loop at the back to attach to your belt.
Note that this type of denim will fade and age as you wear it, so the more you wear it the better it’ll look! I just wished that they stitched over the metal hardware inside the bag so it wouldn’t make contact with a yoyo which could cause damage to the finish of a yoyo. I put tape over the metal parts though.

CD – It’s a mini CD with the song ‘No False Alarm’ from Paranoids. I like the song, I’m actually looking up on more of ‘Paranoids’ music now! Some might not like it, but it’s a nice little addition. The packaging and even the CD art has Anti-Yo’s logo on there so it was actually made for Anti-Yo, they didn’t just buy some random CD and put it in there.

Sticker - It's an Anti-Yo sticker... what else is there to say about it?

Final Thoughts

Does this yoyo live up to the hype? For me it does, for others it might not. People are ripping on the YWET due to the response system, but that’s all preference. Some people actually like the o-rings, if you don’t, switch it out with silicone or something else you love. I for one love the YWET. Nice and big, cool finish, side effects, nice response system (When altered). I leave this review with a ton of pictures.

A Most Excellent Presentation of the YWET yoyo. Thanks for posting>

Very well laid out and explained.  I tweaked mine(alittle)(not much surprise there; being a modder and all; haha), but I have the yoyo wherever I go lately. I will go into detail with my impression; when I get home from work later.  Once people catch up; the yoyo will sell much quicker. To me; it has some serious 'fun and function' potential.. Just needs some minor surgery of sorts(non invasive; lol).  BBL.

Those pictures are beautiful.
They make me so excited for my ywet to come in the mail.
Also, the review quieted my doubts.
I thought the diameter would be too big for me but you made me confident that I will not care about the diameter.
I must thank you for a perfectly written review.

You won't regret your purchase ! If you've been playing only undersized yoyos, it'll be quite a different experience, but a good one.
I've been playing it non-stop for the past few days and I just love it. Smiley
I have taken out the Groove bearing and put in my 10 ball. Not that I don't like the Groove bearing, just that I'd rather have a quiet already broken in bearing while playing indoors. The screeching noise really irritates my parents...

Very nice review indeed. I really liked the layout of the pictures and felt like they actually truly added something to the review. To address the tumbled vs. blasting issue, a tumbled finish is exactly that - the raw unfinished yoyo goes into a tumbling rig with blast media inside and literally tumbles around unil it gets the matte finish. Your '07 888 has a tumbled finish as well. I'm really surprised that they would have opted for a tumbled finish on the ywet though. I think that just turns me off from it even more.

Very good and in-depth review. I share the same opinion! In contrary I siliconed it instantly (only the first inner circle closest to the bearing). I think it plays rubbish with the o-rings in it (too much friction OR maybe you would have to break them in which I think would take ages). Reminds me of old yoyojams. Anyhow, the yoyo plays fantastic when it's siliconed.

Also the string eating issue that some people mention, it never happened to me. Maybe because I removed the o-rings after the first throw? Could be for that reason. Also I didnt use any material to rub against the yoyo to make it feel smoother. Guess I have a good one smiley

on mine the o rings were snaggy during play but slipped on binds.  quite the impressive fail
