Help me make my first combos
« on: October 22, 2011, 09:15:20 PM »

Hey guys I'm trying to make some easy but impressive to spectators combos. Im trying to master the basics right now(can do most tricks up to zipper on yoyoexpert tutorials) and want to show some friends at school but don't really have any good combos to do. Can you guys give me some advice on how to piece together some tricks?

Right now the only thing I can do is a trapeze, trapeze and his brother, double or nothing, Eli hops once and end with a green triangle although it's getting old. As far as front play I know more tricks but no combos

Keep learning tricks. The more you know, the easier it will get to find tricks that string together well. For instance, combining eli hops with skin the gerbil can look pretty nice.

Right now I'm just learning the end of mcbrides rollercoaster although I keep spinning when I do the whole thing. It may have to do with the fact that the response is worn though. And for a normal freestyle are all 1a players put in the same class or is there a beginner and expert classes? I'd like to give it a shot this summer in downtown Chicago even though I wouldn't have a chance of winning. The one thing I've been having a lot of fun and frustration is finding other ways to mount tricks like brain twister I can mount it when dismounting a whip and zipper. The other day I got out of a one and a half mount into a GT but don't know how and a friend is trying to teach me a way to mound gyroscopic flop from a double or nothing without slowing down. Plent of fun but I still have a lot to learn. If only I had Internet and didn't have to use my phone

A few contests have a novice freestyle division, but most of them don't. I wouldn't recommend doing a freestyle, though, until you can at least do all the 1A ladder tricks (the ones on the left side of this page). Probably compete in ladder for your first contest as well.

So if I compete in a ladder who wins? I'm sure there will be a lot of people who will finish it, or at least I think. Is it also judged on smoothness and such? And I feel confident that I'll be able to finish all the tricks in the ladder by Xmas so I'll have 7 months to practice if I go to downtown for the whole expo or whatever it's called

You go up the ladder until you miss two tricks. Your score is how far you got. Tiebreaker is the first miss, then as many eli hops or iron whips as you can do. Due to the consistency and discipline required, it's somewhat rare for anyone to get all the way through the ladder at a contest. It's not judged on smoothness, but if you mess up at all, even on a bind, it's a miss.

When I made my first combo I tried to combine tricks that came from the same mount.  E.g.:  Split bottom mount and do boingy boing, 3 atomic bombs, 3 mach 5s, then go back onto to the string once (like in ripcord, but only once), release and roll out into braintwister mount, braintwister then roll out and bind.  That was my first long combo.  You notice how most of the tricks are from the same mount?
