4xl response
« on: October 15, 2011, 01:49:55 PM »

I baught one of the newest run of 4xls a while back when they first came out.  it was tug responsive out of the box and is STILL tug responsive.  I have another 4xl tht i got on the bst that had the gohst pads pre broken in and it plays completely unresponsive.  Im a little disappointed at how responsive it is because its the grooved edition and grinds like a beast, but its almost too responsive to plastic whip let a lone pop up and land in a grind.  how long do gohst pads take to break in?  is there a different pad of about the same size thas less grabby?  And befor someone posts the obligatory "clean the bearings"  I already did.

Dont know why i didnt think of this before but i threw the bearings from my other 4xl in there and it plays a lot better.  I guess the bearings were toast when i got them.  The response iss still to grabby and not grabby enough with only one pad.  what other response besides flowable will fit?  and does anyone know where to get replacement C size beefcake bearings, preferably terrapin?

Terrapin X bearings are available on Ebay.

Seriously, he figured the bearing thing out.  No need to tell him something he already knows.

Ghost pads take a pretty long time to break in, but once they do they play very well.  If you're looking for something that doesn't take as long to break in, I recommend General Yo Hat Pads.  They're .555 sized, but you can shove them in any response groove and cut them to size with an X-Acto knife.  I use them on all of my yoyos that usually accept silicone because they last much longer and provide perfect binds right away.

Good luck!  The 4XL is a great yoyo, especially the grooved editions!

The Terrapin bearings are awesome.  They spin forever and last just as long.  You should probably pick up some canned air, though, because you can't clean them the same way you would a regular bearing.  There's also a kit that lets you make your own Terrapin treated bearings.  I've never done it myself, but I got a couple that oldedges did and they were wonderful.

I actually made a mistake in my first post.  Definitely use Gen pads, not Hat pads.  The Hat pads aren't nearly as wide as the Gen pads, so they might not be large enough.  the Gen pads are .555 pads, so you've got a lot more material to work with.

The Gen Pads are pretty big, but they're easy to cut once you stick them in the response groove.  Just make sure to use the response groove as a guide while you're cutting or everything will come out all jagged.  I used a thin Hat pad in my Dreadnought instead of shelling out ~$30 to get IR pads shipped from Japan and it worked wonderfully.  A couple thick Gen Pads should do the trick nicely.

How long do hat pads and gen pads generally take to break in because at this boint i have a smooth gen pad in one side and a thin smooth hat pad in the other (i didnt relize they didnt come in sets of two when i ordered  them) and two ceramic terrapin pearings in it.... and i can still get it to come back when i tug.  could there have been a maufacturing error where one or both response areas were not recessed enough?  this is really bumming me out because my older 4xl plays great and this newer one just plays soo responsive!

Try one Chaz and one Ghost, or maybe a Chaz and a Dif pad, those are my preferred settups

Im pretty sure the warrenty was only for 30 days.  bummer Sad  i even tried changing up the type of string and with regular poly i can get it almost completely unresponsive, but if i need to tug it up over wast height like too pop up into a grind, it just returns.  lamesauce

Sorry to hear about the response. I've never heard of a response issue with a XXXXL before so this is a new one for me. All recesses should be identical, so I'd need to check it out and see what's going on. If you want to send it to us so we can take a look hit me up with a PM.

Werrd up!

Sorry for necro, but mine turned semi-responsive even with dry bearings.
