did you strip the old one first?

You might get more vibrant color on a raw titanium versus one that has already been anodized.

You must be familiar with anodizing Ti already!  Smiley

Actually, in this case, I did not strip the old ano first because I wanted to see how it would come out.  I will, however, have some work on perfectly raw titanium that I am hoping will come out quite bright.

So Saintrobyn's recommendation got me thinking, and I wasn't perfectly happy with the pink finish, so I stripped the old anodized layer off the Aurora and tried two different colors.  Here's the same Aurora in blue and gold.  These colors seem to be more visually 'stable'.  The pink would alternate between gray and pink depending on what angle you looked at it.  The blue and gold are more solidly blue and gold.  You still get that interesting shimmery titanium look, but it isn't as pronounced.  There's a hint of pink from before where I could not remove all of the old anodization layer, but I actually think it makes for an interesting accent.  I personally like the colors now better.

Will be experimenting more on some other Ti yoyos that people are sending me.  This will include splash and fade finishes.

I'm really excited to see what you come up with.  You're a very talented individual and I'm expecting nothing less than greatness.

Pretty soon we will see crazy yoyo's that look like this.

I think the yoyo should be blue with hints of that pink all around. Like swirls <3

Yeah that pink looks awesome on the blue. That is a beautiful yoyo. I could only imagine how it looks in person.

@Gunstar: It is a lot prettier now, imo.  I personally never liked the NsCO green that they chose for the Aurora, but that is just me.  As always it's hard to capture the look of a yoyo in photos due to the metallic reflections, etc.  But for titanium it is even harder than aluminum because you miss out on the irridescence.

@Cali: Yup, you did, thank you!  I actually tried a piece and it wouldn't anodize at all though.  I am not sure if it is a non-anodizable alloy or if it needs to be stripped first.  (Maybe it needs to be stripped.  I'll give it another shot to experiment on again.)  BTW, I still think I have some rice krispy M&Ms for you.  Tongue

I have friends that know a thing or two about anodizing. While I have never done it myself I have asked a lot of questions.

Let me know when you have mastered this technique, I would love to have my Sovereign #30 done in the exact same way.

Yeah, Vendetta did that one.  It's quite a looker.  I believe I should be able to achieve something very similar.  In fact, the Ti rod that's in my first post for this thread is done in the same manner.

That is Justin's Sov. but he didn't do that himself. He anodized in aluminum only.

The titanium rod was very hard to see clearly. The shadows in the threads made it look muddy. Do you have any rainbow examples on a smooth titanium surface?

Ah, I was under the impression that he anodized that as well.  I don't yet have rainbow anodize examples on smooth titanium.  I plan on working on that next, so I should have some soon.  So far, I believe the biggest challenge with anodizing has been getting consistent, solid colors.  (This is for both aluminum and Ti.)

We'll see though because I haven't tried yet.  I suspect I will have some stuff to show by end of next week though.

Yeah, that's how you anodize Ti, just with an electric current and an electrolytic solution -- no dyes necessary.
