A huge thank you to everyone who came out to South Street Seaport on Saturday for the contest and a special thank you to our esteemed panel of judges. Andre Boulay, Henry Dineen, Jun Aramaki, Hironori Mi, Stu Brown, Rafael Matsunaga, Black, Brandon Baines and Nate Sutter (and me i guess!).
For those of you who missed out on finals, worry not. Full preliminary results will be posted soon as well.
The Early Show featured an appearance this morning by Pat Cuartero and a number of international yo-yo players, all in the city getting ready for the 2009 International Yo-Yo Open. Check out the clip here – even the anchors are getting into the yo-yo spirit!
Yesterday, YoYoNation’s own Pat Cuartero took part in a discussion with Tom Kuhn, the father of the modern yo-yo, on The Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC. Topics ranged from the biggest yo-yo in the world, to the use of yo-yos in zero gravity, to the zen-like “State of Yo” felt by yo-yo players. If you’ve never experienced the State of Yo, make sure to listen to this segment!
Hiraku Fujii, a performer of the highest caliber, stole the 2008 X-Division with a 2A routine so beautiful it made emcee Pat Cuartero cry. Hiraku is indisputably one of the best 2A players in the world, having taken home not only the IYYO 2008 X-Division title but also the Japan National title for 2A the same year. His stage presence is undeniable, and his performance was probably as close to perfect as a 2A player has ever given. Now the time has come to see if he can top that at this year’s competition.
Shinya Kido was the winner of the 2008 A-Division, with an absolutely insane display of speed and manual dexterity. Shinya performed front and side style tricks with equal ease, and even mixed them up with the difficult 45-degree angle style. His clean performance featured a variety of whips, lacerations, and other complex and impressive tricks. While Shinya is easily one of the top players in the world for 1A, it remains to be seen if he can defend his title at the 2009 Open.
You’ve watched the videos, now get ready to see the top players in the world performing LIVE at the 2009 International Yo-Yo Open – this Saturday, August 8th at Pier 17, South Street Seaport, New York City!
