Japanese Yo-Yo Stars Competing at BAC

Konichiwa, Nationites!

Tsubasa Onishi, Mark “Yosshi” Mikamoto, and Yusuke Moriki share a few words with YoYoNation.com about BAC and the upcoming PRO-TEAM MELTDOWN!

Just in case you didn’t know, here are a few facts about them:

Tsubasa Onishi: 2004 4A World Yo-Yo Champion, 2005 and 2006 4A US National Champion (he currently studies in Las Vegas, and is therefore eligible to compete at the National Yo-Yo Contest as a US player), ear-trick master, Team Buzzon / Throw_Yo.

Mark “Yosshi” Mikamoto: Current “Iron Man” of Yo, Team YoYoJam, and yo-yo teacher / mentor.

Yusuke Moriki: Team Buzzon / Throw_Yo, North Japan Regional Yo-Yo Contest, 2A 2nd Place, overall “funny-trick” master.

They’re all amazing players, and are competitors for the PRO-TEAM MELTDOWN. What is the Pro-Team meltdown, you ask?

Well, it’s a “side contest” at BAC where representatives from certain companies are called on stage and have to perform a RANDOM style of yo-yo play. For example, if the judges call “5A”, the competitor will have to pick up a 5A yo-yo, and start doing a full minute of 5A to the best of their ability. What’s it mean? Well, it means that all of the competitors have to have SOME knowledge of ALL of the styles of yo-yo play, but we all know that they all have strengths and weaknesses. It’ll be interesting to see who comes through as the winner at the end. There are some AMAZING competitors at this event!

Here are some comments from our Japanese friends, who will all be competing against each other at the Pro-Team Meltdown.

2007 Bay Area Classic - The Expedition - Day 2.

Hey Folks!

I meant to write this post last night, but I unfortunately fell asleep. Sleep? Pat? I know, I know. Read on to find out why:

We started our day at the famous Ferry Building, eating our way through the varied gourmet shops filled with delicious gastronomic delights:

The Ferry Building, San Francisco, CA

Miette Patisserie, Ferry Building, San Francisco, CA

By the time we were done, our bellies were full and we found ourselves in good company: Sonny (Anti-Yo’s other half), Boyd Seth (CLYW Sponsored), Paul Yath (Born Crucial founder, Buzzon/Throw_Yo sponsored, 3 Time US National 3A Champion, and reigning 3A World Champion), Spencer Berry (Duncan Crew), Paul Escolar (Trick Innovator Extrodinaire), Jeff Longoria (Inventor of Spirit Bomb), Sky Kiyabu (former original THP member, and 1998 National 1A Champion), and Seth Peterson (Formerly Duncan Crew) had joined our party.

We then met Mark Montgomery at Self Edge. Coincidentally, it was his 22nd birthday!

After getting some gelato at La Copa Loca, we ate some more, at La Taqueria (perhaps the BEST taqueria in the country, in my most humble non-expert opinion).

We followed up with some good times at Kiya’s place, and learned how to make Wendy’s hamburgers from MC Grill Skillz.

Fortunately, learning how to make hamburgers got us hungry, so we went to Big Lantern for Chinese food!

By the time this meal was over, I could barely move (Amy mentioned something about my pale and overall unpleasant look).

And so we ended the night by going to our hotel rooms (we opted to take the stairs) and passing out.

In summary: We ate, met with some of the best yo-yo players in the country, and ate some more.

Not too shabby for a “Yo-Yo Contest Trip!”

Stay tuned for more updates on The Expedition!

Monsters, Metal

Day 2 of 2007 Bay Area Classic (The Expedition) was filled again with much eating, as well as a lot of hanging out with some very chill yo-yo personalities. More to come on this.

Meanwhile, a retrospective of some great animal/monster figurines we found at Kiya’s place, juxtaposed with some of our favorite things.

(left) Blue cat; Anti-Yo Fluchs. Thanks to Seth Peterson for letting us borrow his yo-yo to fulfill our photographic whims.

(center) Green monster; YoYoFactory G5, Black Edition. The black G5 has already seen this blog this week, but thanks anyway, Weber.

(right) Red cat; YoYoFactory G5, 1st Edition, with counterweight. We grabbed this off a table and aren’t sure who it belongs to, but we’re pretty certain he or she is awesome. Thanks, awesome friend.

Welcome to BAC
